Join a new and rapidly evolving team bringing data intelligence to City transportation planning and operations! The Transportation GIS Specialist supports a variety of transportation programs ranging from signal operations to sidewalk planning by creating and managing spatial data, developing web-based GIS applications and maps, and evaluating and improving data workflows. In this role, you’ll also have the opportunity to work closely with the City’s award-winning GIS team in the Information Technology Department and collaborate with GIS teams across the City, growing your skills and gathering solutions to support transportation programs.

About Us:
The Business Intelligence unit was created in 2023 to centralize data management and the development of data-based tools for programs across the Transportation department. The transportation field is changing rapidly with the exponential growth in data on how people move around the City and interact with transportation infrastructure. The Business Intelligence unit helps program managers identify and procure useful data, analyze data and track key metrics, and leverage new technologies like computer vision. These services support asset management, performance monitoring, and the development and prioritization of capital transportation projects.
- Manage and maintain transportation GIS data to ensure accuracy and reliability
- Develop and execute data processing workflows to support transportation operations
- Collaborate with transportation programs to gather business requirements and ensure GIS data meets operational needs
- Develop and maintain web-based GIS maps and applications to support operations and performance monitoring
- Develop legible and attractive maps for presentations and public meetings
- Conduct field surveys of assets for special projects
- This role will require the operation of a City-owned vehicle
Education and Experience:
Associate's Degree in information technology, geography, geographical information systems or directly related field and two years of technical geographical information systems experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Skill In:
- Desktop GIS (ArcGIS Pro and extensions)
- Web GIS (ArcGIS Online)
- GIS data management, workflow development, and documentation
- Functional and business requirement gathering
- Customer Service (both internal and external customers)
Ability to:
- Support, develop, and maintain data management workflows
- Support, develop, and manage GIS data and metadata
- Administer and manage ArcGIS Online transportation groups and content
- Configure ArcGIS web applications for management, analysis, visualization, and reporting of data
- Provide technical support for GIS users within the transportation department
- Continue to stay current with modern and emerging technology
- Create and maintain documentation of GIS data-related processes
