Temporary GIS Technician

General Statement of Duties
This non-exempt, non-benefited, temporary position is responsible for assisting the GIS department in various projects and tasks. Performs related duties as required.

Supervision Received
Works under direct supervision of the GIS Supervisor and the general direction of the Director of Technology.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The listed functions may be modified with additions and deletions, or changed to achieve District goals and objectives:

  • Assists GIS Team in completing various projects, including field work.  
  • Research records, including but not limited to, easements, as-builts and plats, as necessary.
  • Read and interpolate legal descriptions and exhibits as needed.
  • Digitize as-built and easement data.
  • Creates various map products with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Portal for Enterprise.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Computer knowledge including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook Knowledge of digitizing and data manipulation procedures for the GIS.
  • Data entry skills are required for accurate maintenance of a GIS geodatabase
  • Basic knowledge of general construction and civil engineering principles.
  • Ability to interpret and use information from maps, plans, specifications, regulations, blueprints, and technical documentation. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, organize activities in order to complete tasks in accordance with priorities, address multiple demands and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with broad direction and limited supervision.  Ability to work effectively with supervisors, co-workers, vendors, contractors, developers and the general public.

Qualification / Experience

  • Must be working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Engineering, Planning or another closely related field with completion of some GIS coursework. 
  • Experience with ESRI software such as ArcGIS desktop or ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Familiar with basic Cartographic principles and practices.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a Motor Vehicle Record acceptable to the District’s insurance company. 

Working Conditions / Physical Activities

  • Monday through Friday, hours may vary, up to a 40-hour workweek.  May be subject to overtime on an as-needed basis to work within the department and for other duties as assigned.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting; however, may be performed on construction sites where there may be exposure to dust, noise, traffic and moving construction equipment; and/or at a wastewater treatment facility where noise, irritants, dust, dirt, bacteria, hazardous chemicals/air/materials and fumes are present. 
  • Work may take place outside in all weather conditions.  May be exposed to risks typically associated with working around water, chemicals, electricity and other man-made and natural hazards.
  • Full range of body movements including stooping, twisting, kneeling, bending, leaning, reaching, climbing (heights), stretching and working in awkward positions. May stand for extended periods of time.
  • Light physical effort required by handling objects up to 20 pounds occasional and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
  • Must be able to operate vehicles and equipment, read, record and interpret information.  Must be able to communicate with other employees and the public.
