Senior GIS Analyst

The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation is looking for a talented, detail-oriented individual to fill the role of Outdoor Recreation Senior GIS Analyst. You will help lead, manage, and support DOR’s newest agency by delivering GIS needs to increase capacity and efficiency while playing a key role in maintaining the statewide recreation asset database.

Principal Duties:

  • Coordinate with DOR’s Leadership to establish GIS vision, objectives, solutions, and strategies through strategic planning and continuous improvement.
  • Identify GIS needs and methods to increase efficiency in operations, planning needs, and community outreach efforts.
  • Contribute to Utah’s Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) through analysis and map development.
  • Coordinate with DOR’s Grants & Planning staff to provide technical mapping support as part of the Outdoor Recreation Planning Assistance (ORPA) program.
  • Coordinate with DOR’s Grants & Planning team to develop mechanisms for updating the statewide recreation asset database as new recreation infrastructure is developed.
  • Work with DOR communications to develop GIS products that help tell the story of Outdoor Recreation in Utah.
  • Publish GIS services and map products to help DOR achieve its mission and objectives.
  • Facilitate quality control and growth of the statewide recreation asset database.
  • Coordinate with DOR’s Law Enforcement, Boating Program, OHV Program, Trail Crew, and other operations to maximize efficiency and program effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with the state Division of Technology Services on some IT related needs for the DOR.
  • Experience with using and administering ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server/Portal.
  • Provide support to verify public access and legal Right of Ways for trail maintenance and recreation planning purposes.
  • Provide GIS support for regional trail and outdoor recreation infrastructure planning needs, including data collection and spatial analysis.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • GIS certification from an accredited college or university, in Geographic Information Systems.
  • A bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, bio-regional planning, or Parks, Recreation & Tourism OR at least 4 years of demonstrated professional experience managing
  • GIS projects, datasets, etc.
  • Experience with using, configuring, and manipulating ESRI and other GIS-related products and tools.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work project management experience.
  • Demonstrated abilities to build collaborative, solution-based partnerships and work with diverse people.
  • The ability to find creative, pragmatic ways to solve problems and improve processes.
  • An understanding and appreciation for the immense responsibility the State of Utah has in helping to steward our vast outdoor recreation assets.
  • Specialized GIS skills such as programming, scripting, advanced cartography, spatial modeling, etc.
  • An Understanding of Utah’s unique Right of Way requirements, RS 2477 implications, and land management travel management planning.
