Position Information

Limited Duration: This position is scheduled to last for 24 months upon hire date. 

The City of Woodinville is hiring a GIS Technician to be part of the Administrative Services Department’s Information Services (IS) Division. The IS Division is responsible for overseeing the City’s Information Services and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) operations to ensure alignment with the City’s daily operations and long-term initiatives.

The GIS Technician will have the opportunity to gain experience through hands-on tasks, project-based activities, and occasional field work. Working closely with the GIS Analyst and the IS Manager, this position supports the development of interactive web maps and applications, creates and maintains digital and paper maps, help improve geodatabase organization and performs data creation, maintenance, and analysis using a variety of software applications. This position will conduct related research to support modern GIS best practices. 

About the City
Woodinville, Washington is a premier tourist destination with a population of about 14,000, though the City will likely grow rapidly over the next five years or so. This growth is resulting in lots of exciting projects to work on. Located about 20 miles northeast of Seattle, Woodinville offers the benefits of a bustling urban area against the backdrop of the picturesque Sammamish River Valley. Woodinville is known for its tourism industries with over 130 wineries, breweries, and distilleries and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.

It's a great place to work and we manage to do a lot with only about 53 employees, including planning, permitting, code enforcement, street/storm water maintenance, infrastructure construction and maintenance, parks, and general administrative services.

Please note that the City is primarily an in-person work environment. This opening is based at Woodinville City Hall and will work primarily in an office environment.  

Essential Functions
  • Support City departments with GIS requests, graphics, and reports. Research, analyze, and organize GIS data for reusability, while efficiently managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Assist in the development of the GIS Data Management Plan, focusing on the organization and maintenance of the geodatabase and associated data structures. 
  • Support GIS data collection through field work, conversion of as-builts and images, and extraction and integration of data from permitting, financial, and capital improvement project systems.
  • Perform geospatial analysis on GIS data and operate GIS equipment, including various data capture tools.
  • Maintain, refine, and distribute GIS data, maps, and online resources for both public and internal City use through the ArcGIS Online web portal and the City’s website.
  • Help coordinate with internal staff to maintain the data asset management inventory, ensuring all data is current and accessible, and support alignment of GIS and asset management with the City’s business operations.
  • Document GIS and CAD specifications, assist in establishing cartographic standards, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Support implementation of quality control measures, ensuring metadata compliance, and maintain consistency with industry best practices. 
  • Assist City staff, departments, and field personnel with troubleshooting GIS help tickets
Other Job Functions

Work is performed primarily indoors in an office setting.  Physical effort is needed to lift and carry equipment and supplies.  Basic communication skills such as talking, seeing, and hearing are needed for frequent person-to-person contact, computer, and telephone usage.  Use of hands and fingers to handle objects and control automated equipment, computers and office machines, using finger dexterity.  Patience and persuasiveness are needed when interacting with others.  Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.  Necessary aptitudes include understanding instructions, numerical aptitude, problem solving, analytical ability, memory, concentration, and judgment.  The nature of work has frequent interruptions and deadlines.  May be required to work beyond normal working hours.

You will maintain effective communication within the City; provide quality customer service; and deal courteously with internal and external customers. You may be issued city provided cell phones and tablets to test GIS web services, interactive maps, data collection services to respond to emergencies as applicable. Performs other duties as required or assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications + Job Demands
  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, environmental studies/science, planning, or a related field with an emphasis in GIS. 

  • Three or more years of experience with GIS products and technologies, especially ESRI ArcGIS, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
