About the Position: Under the supervision of the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Manager, the GIS Technician performs technical work to support Des Moines Water Works’ Geographic Information System (GIS) and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems. Responsibilities include accurately maintaining, updating, and creating GIS records, maps, and spatial data, as well as preparing and revising CAD drawings and record documents used throughout the organization.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Code, digitize, and enter data into GIS and CAD systems.
- Edit and maintain GIS layers for water distribution and treatment system assets.
- Prepare, update, and revise CAD drawings, including plans, details, system maps, and record drawings.
- Perform quality control checks to ensure accuracy of GIS data, CAD drawings, and system records.
- Update GIS and CAD records based on construction drawings, as-built information, field verification, and GPS data.
- Create maps, exhibits, and spatial reports for internal and external use.
- Converts sketches, redlines, and field notes into accurate CAD and GIS updates.
- Collect GPS measurements for new or modified assets and incorporate results into GIS.
- Maintain drawing and data standards, including file organization, naming conventions, and layer management.
- Respond to requests for maps, drawings, utility records, or GIS/CAD data from internal departments.
- Interpret engineering plans, plats, and construction documents to ensure accurate updates to system records.
- Coordinate with internal departments to maintain current and accurate GIS and CAD datasets.
- Serve as a resource and provide assistance to staff regarding GIS and CAD processes and record accuracy.
Education:
Associate degree in GIS, Drafting/CAD, Engineering Technology, Geography, Industrial Technology, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
- Two to three years of experience in GIS, CAD drafting, utility mapping, or engineering support preferred.
Licenses/Certifications:
- None.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Knowledge Of:
- ESRI software and GIS principles.
- MicroStation and CAD drafting standards.
- Water distribution system components and facilities, including their functions
Skills:
- Creation of maps that are clear, accurate, and easily understood by diverse audiences.
- Interpret and apply highly technical instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
Abilities:
- Ability to read, write, communicate, and understand English effectively.
- Basic understanding and use of:
- Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software.
- GIS and CAD software for mapping and design tasks.
- GPS equipment and data collection techniques.

- Occasionally lifts and carries objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Occasional walking, standing, bending, and reaching.
- Manual dexterity to operate computer equipment and GPS devices.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Primarily works in an office or similar indoor environment.
- Occasionally works outdoors or at construction sites.
- May involve working near moving traffic or equipment.
