Summary:

Under direction of the GIS Supervisor, the GIS Technician will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of GIS data and maps for the water/waste water infrastructure, as well as respond to requests for custom maps and/or reports. This position is located in San Jose, California.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains accurate and complete records of Cal Water GIS and asset data
  • Assists with acquisition and stewardship of GIS and asset data
  • Establishes QA/QC procedures and techniques, and performs technical QA/QC of data
  • Builds and manages geometric and tabular data validation rules
  • Produces cartographic presentations, reports, and analyses
  • Determine effective presentation of cartographic information and select appropriate visual elements such as:  map projection, scale, color, shading, symbols, graphs, tables, and overlays
  • Builds and maintains Process Management and GIS Data Capture Standards documentations
  • Develops Global Positioning System (GPS) data collection and processing methodologies
  • Develops and applies GIS analytical methodologies and assess appropriateness of GIS applications for specific projects
  • Troubleshoot GIS application problems
  • Provides technical assistance and training to internal GIS customers, including the application of geospatial data, tools, and methods to address customer needs
  • Assists in preparing project proposals, scope of work, and project plan documents
  • Manages projects and tasks with competing deadlines
  • Participates in the Company’s Continuous Improvement process and projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in geography, computer science, earth science, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Consideration will be given to candidates with certifications and accreditation's  

-Geographic Information Systems Certificate

-Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) Certification

-ESRI Technical Certifications

  • Four (4) years experience in GIS, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in water, wastewater, or other utilities is preferred
  • Valid California Driver License

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in the use of the following software programs: 

-ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop with extensions

-Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook)

-GPS Software, e.g. Trimble

-Autodesk AutoCAD Map

  • Experience working with ArcGIS linear networks, versioning, and replication
  • Knowledge of cartographic principles
  • Work effectively with all levels of employees and management
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other departments, supervisor, and employees
  • Commitment to excellent customer service
  • Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Flexible and able to prioritize work
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy under time sensitive deadlines
  • Develop scripts using programming tools such as Python, which is necessary to facilitate the GIS functions
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow complex workflows
  • Interpret and analyze technical drawings
  • Experience publishing map services using AGOL is desired
  • Experience with systems Integration of GIS with other applications such as Maximo is desired
