Job Summary
Under general supervision, the GIS Technician supports the development, maintenance, and quality control of geographic information system (GIS) data, applications, and mapping products used by City departments. This position assists in maintaining enterprise GIS datasets, producing maps and spatial data products, and supporting web-based GIS applications used across the organization.
The GIS Technician works collaboratively with City staff to ensure GIS data accuracy, accessibility, and usability while adhering to established City policies and procedures. This position contributes to ongoing GIS initiatives and assists with improving GIS workflows and processes. The position is primarily remote, with occasional in-office meetings and limited fieldwork as needed.
Essential Job Functions and Other Important Duties
  • Perform GIS data entry, editing, and maintenance using source materials such as easements, agreements, engineering plans, and case files. Maintain GIS data for City infrastructure, including utilities, streets, and park assets.
  • Create maps, graphics, and other cartographic products to support City departments, boards, commissions, and internal projects.
  • Conduct occasional field data collection and verification of infrastructure and City assets using GPS equipment and mobile GIS applications.
  • Assist in maintaining and supporting web GIS applications, online maps, and GIS data services used by City departments.
  • Perform basic GIS data quality control tasks, including reviewing spatial data and attributes to ensure accuracy and consistency across datasets.
  • Provide basic technical support to internal users for GIS applications, including assistance with web maps, data access, and standard GIS workflows.
  • Assist with user training, documentation, and onboarding related to GIS tools and processes.
  • Remain accessible via personal cell phone during work hours for addressing job-related matters or emergencies, using city-approved applications for communication and response.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Formal Education: Associate degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant coursework may be considered.
Relatable Work Experience: Six (6) months with GIS software through coursework, internship experience, or professional work.
Training, Licenses, and Certifications: None required.
Required Qualifications: Experience working with GIS in a municipal government or public sector environment. Experience with AutoCAD, CityWorks, or similar asset management systems. Experience working within an enterprise GIS environment.
 
Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed & Environmental Factors and Other Physical Requirements
Working knowledge of GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related web GIS applications.
Skill in operating a personal computer and standard business software, including Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to interpret maps, engineering plans, and legal descriptions such as metes and bounds with training as needed.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, other departments, and external stakeholders.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and maintain attention to detail while working with spatial data.
An interest in learning new technologies and supporting the adoption of GIS tools and workflows.
Subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an office environment. 
Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment.
Regularly scheduled for a 5-day, 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday.
