Nature of Work

This position is the entry level position into the GIS Division and the employee will receive on the job training. Under general supervision of the GIS Supervisor, the purpose of the class is to perform technical work in the maintenance of municipal geographical data. This is accomplished through research, gathering source material, data entry, digitizing and running custom software.  The class is also responsible for having knowledge of software, hardware, peripheral equipment and terminology related to GIS.  The incumbent updates and transfers geographical data, and prepares maps, and related graphical media as directed.  Work is reviewed through observation for accuracy and compliance with the desired results.  Performs related work as required. 

Essential Job Functions
  • Responsible for updating and maintaining municipal geographical data, i.e., entering new data, changes and/or transfers into the GIS system.
  • Receives new data, site plans, and architectural drawings for the purpose of maintaining accuracy.
  • Transfers data from non-digital sources to GIS digital formats.
  • Performs revisions as needed.
  • Operates computers, plotter. 
  • Answers public inquiries and inter departmental inquiries pertaining to geographic information.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Performs related work as required. 
  • Is able to review essential functions for efficient results and accuracy. 
  • Ability to work effectively with elected officials, charter officers, department and/or division managers, and representatives of other agencies, other city employees, and the general public.
Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma or GED. We seek an individual with a strong interest in GIS who is eager to learn and grow in the field. Has knowledge of standard terminology, techniques, and practices of computer equipment. Has experience in data entry/processing, especially in a geospatial context. Demonstrated software knowledge includes ESRI products such as ARCGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro. Candidate is able to evaluate user needs concerning requests and has the ability to create presentation grade maps and graphics using GIS software. Knowledge of scripting languages and tools such as SQL, Python, Arcade, and Model Builder preferred. Knowledge of permit and development review processes as well as familiarity using a ticketing system desired.  

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES:  Special Certifications and Licenses refer to state, federal, or professional certifications or licenses required entering or maintaining the job.

Vocational/technical diploma in drafting, surveying, mapping, or related GIS focus; with working knowledge of modern GIS programs, experience with ESRI ArcGIS is preferred.   

Requires passing a Level 2 Background screening.

Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

Must obtain CJIS Certification within 6 months of hire. 

Marginal Job Functions

Research new GIS technology, networking with other GIS agencies.
