GIS Technician

As a member of the Geospatial Information Services team (GIS), the GIS Technician III job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepares and maintains various types of GIS spatial layers (cadastral, utility networks, property, right of way, topographic, planimetric, flood zones, addresses, street networks, street and addressing guide, tax maps, mapbooks, landuse, zoning) and database information required in support of the municipal geographic information system ensuring accurate, complete spatial information layers to established cartographic standards.
  • Prepares final GIS products and reports from non-graphic databases as required in support of the municipal geographic information system.
  • Designs reports and queries to aid spatial data capture.
  • Designs GIS templates, mapbooks, and reports.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, cartographic, and writing skills.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Education (above high school) and/or experience equal to seven (7) years operating Geographic Information Systems, or Cartographic systems, including plotting, entering data, digitizing, analyzing, quality control and assurance of GIS databases, products, maps, aerial photographs, remotely sensed images, map books or analytical reports, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Cartographer, GIS/Mapping Technician, Engineering, Surveying or Planning Technician, or computer specialist; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience must include two (2) years experience creating new GIS database layers, features tables, database reports, table joins, and spatial queries in a GIS application environment (e.g. Arc-GIS, Geomedia, GRASS or related GIS product environment).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

-Bachelor's Degree in a geographic information-related field such as Geography, Cartography, Earth Science, Ecology, Engineering, Planning, Environmental Sciences, or any other related field.
-Two years experience creating COGO layers, tax maps or site plans in GIS or CADD.
-Experience with tax maps and cadastral mapping.
-Experience working in a team environment.
- Experience with Spatial Join
