GIS Technician I

Chatham County presents an exciting opportunity for a Geographic Information System Technician I, where you'll assist in developing and maintaining GIS data resources, perform data gathering and analysis, and produce accurate maps for public use and fieldwork activities. Examples of Duties
In this role, you 

  • Assist with developing and maintaining GIS data resources to be utilized for public access to geographic data. 
  • Assist with data gathering and compilation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GPS, mapping, and data analysis. 
  • Perform varied data gathering and entry to create, maintain, display, and update Geographic Information Systems databases, coverages, and linkages to various GIS databases. 
  • Produce accurate maps and other data representations for public use and fieldwork activity. 
  • Go out in the field to visually locate items to resolve conflicting information and ensure data accuracy. 
  • Record and document details of map updates, additions, and deletions. 
  • Utilize appropriate GIS-related source documents to input data into digitized databases to create and update maps. 
  • Make accurate advanced mathematical computations. 
  • Operate GIS and Engineering Programs on a computer workstation. 
  • Digitize plat data in Arc/Info, draft engineering design drawings and plans, perform routine drafting to create and correct tax maps, and create and maintain SharePoint databases. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Drafting, GIS, or a related field, and 
  • Two (2) years’ experience in automated mapping, civil engineering, and/or appraisal technology; or 
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Completion of ESRI software courses in ArcGIS Pro.

During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.

In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing.

Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.
