Position Summary:

Under the direction of the GIS Director, the GIS Technician I performs tasks necessary to assist in the operation, modification, and maintenance of the County’s Geographic Information System (GIS).

Responsibilities:

• Obtain, create, verify, and maintain various collections of spatial and tabular data.
• Edit and deliver GIS data, services and maps to meet the needs of the local county government operations.
• Perform automated and manual edits on ESRI Geodatabases and Shapefiles containing characteristics of established coordinate systems and ESRI feature topology.
• Issue physical addresses and process road name petitions.
• Collect and process GPS field data
• Assist the public and county personnel with mapping- and data-related requests.
• Other duties as required by the Director.

III.             Required Skills

• Understanding of Cadastral, E-911 and NG-911 fundamentals.
• Ability to work with GIS- and computer-related tools and principles, including but not limited to Cartography, GPS, Microsoft Office and ESRI mapping applications.
• Ability to collect and process GPS data using Trimble equipment/software or related hardware and software.
• Ability to carry out field work in adverse weather and terrain conditions including mountain hiking and driving on primitive roads.
• Ability to communicate well in both verbal and written forms to various audiences.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
• Ability to interact constructively with various level staff in a team setting.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various county departments and other local, state and federal agencies.

IV.       Qualifications and Experience

• College coursework in Geography with emphasis in Cartography/GIS or equivalent.
• Cartography/GIS experience in a practical setting.
• Possession of a valid Montana Driver’s License.
• Experience in local government GIS is strongly preferred.
