GIS Technician

The GIS technician will compile data from remote sensing devices and cartographic or global positioning system maps, and enter it into GIS databases. This person will work with the GIS team and assist other engineers throughout CVE.

Requested Degree/Certifications/Skills

  • BA/BS degree in Geography, GIS Technology, Urban Studies, Environmental Studies, or related technical field. Significant GIS-related coursework preferred. Experience may be substituted.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in a professional GIS environment.
  • Must be efficient and skilled using GIS Software, mainly ESRI ArcGIS software products (ArcGIS Desktop 10.8x, ArcGIS online, Field Maps app, etc.). Familiarity with AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly with Excel.
  • Must be able to gather, store, and analyze information skillfully. Best practices for file management is a must.
  • Excellent technical, computer, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work alongside GIS team members and other departments, as well as independently.
  • Must be able to balance a workload of long-term projects while performing short-term projects and tasks.
  • Must be able to develop and coordinate project changes and progress and be flexible with workload and deadline priorities. Can complete projects efficiently and on time.
  • Speaks clearly and thoughtfully, listens and gets clarification, and responds well to questions.
  • A positive, collegial attitude and high level of professionalism and ethical behavior are essential.
  • An interest in pursuing continuous education and professional development opportunities. Maintains a working knowledge of the latest GIS technology and information available through professional associations and training. 
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License and insurable driving record.

Job Responsibilities

  • Continuously maintains and updates existing spatial data in an organized, logical, and efficient manner for CVE’s municipal clients.
  • Works with other departments within and outside of CVE to acquire, produce, and maintain data in a GIS program for clients and projects.
  • Follows and implements internal QA/QC procedures.
  • Uses advanced GIS software to implement and populate geodatabases for utility assets and other locational information. including converting and adding available attribute data from existing CAD files and engineering plans. Will use georeferencing and digitizing scanned as-built engineering drawings and converting GIS data from other entities.
  • Manages hosted data within ArcGIS Online and local databases. Follows best practices for storing and sharing data across organizations.
  • Provides effective custom mapping solutions for clients with varying needs and budgets.
  • Prepares finished digital and paper map products and reports.
  • May complete other duties and responsibilities as directed by Supervisor.
  • Position is in-person. Local candidates preferred; no relocation assistance is provided.
