POSITION SUMMARY
The GIS Technician supports the Water Department by maintaining and updating Geographic Information System (GIS) data related to water infrastructure, including water mains, valves, hydrants, meters, and service lines. This role involves field data collection, spatial data analysis, map production, and coordination with engineering and operations teams to ensure accurate and accessible mapping information for system planning, maintenance, and emergency response.
REQUIREMENTS, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides support for the department. In addition to other duties as assigned, the GIS Technician will be responsible for performing and completing work orders related to water services. The position records data on an electronic platform and records and data must be thorough and accurate.
- Update and maintain GIS databases for water infrastructure assets.
- Perform field data collection using GPS equipment and mobile GIS applications.
- Digitize and edit utility features from construction drawings, as-built plans, and survey data.
- Generate maps and reports to support planning, maintenance, and capital improvement projects.
- Assist in developing and maintaining asset management systems and tools.
- Provide technical support and training to staff on the use of GIS tools and applications.
- Complete 811 utility locate requests utilizing ground penetrating radar and electronic locators.
- Review and approve new residential plot plans for water service layout.
- Provide assistance to the Meter Department with back office tasks.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in GIS, preferably in a municipal or utility setting.
- Experience with ArcGIS and Autocad is preferred.
- Strong understanding of spatial data concepts, geodatabase management, and cartographic principles.
- Familiarity with water utility systems, terminology, and infrastructure components.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and construction documents.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and GPS data collection tools (e.g., Trimble, Collector/Field Maps).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not regularly required to sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is required to stand, walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Greater than 50 pounds may require a team lift. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Specific required movements include the following: trunk-bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, and carry, arm’s reach and leg-lifts. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
