JOB SUMMARY
Observe and participate in GIS activities associated with data collection, georeferencing, digitization, asset management, and map creation. The focus will primarily be on GIS software, GPS technology, and data assurance. Gain experience working in a professional setting and develop an understanding of GIS technology and its applications in public service.
ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
An eligible applicant may be called upon to participate in any or all the following activities: (These examples do not include all tasks an applicant may participate in.)
- GIS - Assist with the development, management, and maintenance of GIS data. This potentially consists of entering/updating attributes, digitization, data entry, georeferencing, basic cartography, the creation of meta data, and other duties as assigned.
- GPS - Utilize GPS equipment to acquire coordinates on city assets as directed.
- Create, develop, maintain scrips utilized for feature creation, data collection.
- Create maps or other cartographic products for use by city staff.
- Data collection and general research as directed.
- Attend relevant staff meetings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.
- Work requires physical presence at the job site to perform job duties.
- Basic level of proficiency with ESRI software, ArcGIS Pro, Map, ArcGIS Online.
- Basic knowledge of Java, xml, Python, or arcade scripting languages.
- Basic knowledge of GIS principles.
- Basic knowledge of cartographic principles.
- Ability to interact with members of the public in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to perform required job duties in a safe and responsible manner.
- Good communication skills: ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and carry out assigned job tasks.
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships with the public and other employees.
- Ability to work effectively under time constraints and pressure.
- High degree of mental, visual, and manual dexterity for sustained periods of time.
- High degree of accuracy required.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess either a Certification in GIS or a four-year degree from an accredited degree program. or obtain either within 90 days of hiring.
- Minimum GPA of 2.5 (3.0 preferred) (or diploma if recently graduated).
- Must have a valid standard driver's license.
- Must understand verbal and written materials and instructions; communicate effectively with the public, outside agencies, and city staff in a variety of situations.
- Exhibit a level of proficiency using computers and general understanding of various software applications, such as Microsoft Suite products, and ESRI products.
- Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.
- Must have an awareness of safety, understand the importance of safety, and be able to apply safety practices to the execution of all work.
