The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for the full-time GIS Technician position in the Development Engineering Division of Municipal Utilities. The primary function is to ensure high quality data entry of vector and attribute data into the GIS database.  Data sources available will range from civil engineering plans, in both paper and digital formats, to field collected GPS datasets.  The candidate should be comfortable with georeferencing said plans, converting AutoCAD data into a geodatabase feature class using current ESRI GIS software, and collecting data in the field using GNSS-enabled mobile workflows such as ArcGIS Field Maps or equivalent devices.  A high attention to detail and quality control of the data entry is a requirement.  

The starting salary range is $33.16 - $38.38 per hour depending on relevant experience, with an excellent benefit package.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains the collection, input, and mapping of GIS data for additions to the City’s infrastructure including recently constructed streets, water mains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, streetlights, trails/sidewalks, structures, etc. 
  • Collects data in the field using GNSS-enabled mobile workflows such as ArcGIS Field Maps or other equivalent devices. 
  • Coordinates maintenance and upgrades to the GIS system with the IT Department. 
  • Maintains and updates computer generated water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer atlases as well as subdivision and address maps by utilizing GIS software.
  • Creates and maintains mapbooks for various City departments using data-driven mapping workflows, including setting up map series templates and updating published mapbooks as GIS data changes.
  • Conducts quarterly field inspections of streetlights in coordination with the Traffic Division, including preparing a static map package from the GIS and collecting location and condition data using a GPS device.
  • Scans and backs up as-built construction plans into Docushare and other backup media.
  • Assumes responsibility for the content, layout, and production of computer-generated graphics and maps.
  • Maintains filing system for the records of completed projects and maintains electronic plans of construction projects.
  • Obtains parcel legal descriptions and completes parcel research for right-of-way and easements.
  • Assists other departments and divisions during emergencies and performs related duties as assigned.
  • Assists engineering staff with research and studies on a variety of engineering tasks.  
  • Completes a variety of computations including plan measurements, areas, volumes, and other quantity measurements. Assists other engineering staff in preparing construction estimates and related calculations.
  • Assists with the preparation of the annual snow and ice control manuals including street and trail plowing routes. 
  • Assists with the preparation of the annual mowing maps.
  • Maintains the annual bridge inspection records and files.
Entry Requirements and Skills

Graduation from high school and two (2) years technical schooling with classes in GIS (or an equivalent amount of education and experience) is required. Education beyond high school may be substituted at a rate of two (2) years experience for one (1) year of education.

Possess knowledge of the principles of civil engineering, general construction, municipal utilities and public works operations.  Includes the ability to make moderately complex computations, maintain engineering records / databases, read and interpret engineering plans, and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.  Computer–aided drafting (CAD) knowledge and ability is helpful but not required.  

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Shall be able to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Iowa.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in both a typical office and construction field environment.
  • Periodically lifts heavy objects such as plan sets for filing.  
  • Climbs and walks over uneven terrain.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be insurable.
  • Must be sighted.
  • Must be able to hear normal conversation.
  • Must be able to speak clearly at normal rate of conversation.
  • Must be able to kneel, squat, and walk.
  • Must be able to move up and down ladders and stairs.
  • Must be able to work in wet, snowy/icy weather conditions.
  • Must keep regular and reliable attendance at work.
