ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

• Performs technical duties in the maintenance, development, and operation of the geographic information systems.
• Creates, maintains, and edits departmental databases, including the preparation of data dictionaries and documentation.
• Prepares and executes queries of individual electronic databases to produce products that include but are not limited to maps, tables, plots, charts, and graphs.
• Using the G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) and other technologies, prepares a variety of analysis of electronic information, including the preparation of multi-layered and linked maps and tabular data; prepares graphic materials showing the results of these analysis and assists staff in interpreting the results.
• Ensures the quality and accuracy of a variety of geographic information system data, including researching and revising maps and data from other data sources.
• Operates a variety of geographic information system input and output devices, including scanners, printers, and plotters.
• Must be familiar with field data collection and analysis including the use of the GPS (Global Positioning System) equipment.
• Performs related graphical support as needed.
• Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
• Performs other related work as assigned.

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES

Knowledge of:

• Knowledge of basic understanding of principles and methodologies associated with G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) Technology.
• Knowledge of basic database management principles and techniques using common software packages.
• Knowledge of technologies used in recording and conducting analysis of land use, planning and geographic information, including cartographic/the basic symbols and terminology used in mapping.
• Knowledge of digitizing and data manipulation procedures from G.I.S (Geographic Information Systems).

• Ability to process and analyze complex datasets and information.
• Ability to manage database and update records.
• Ability to prepare routine analysis using G.I.S (Geographic Information Systems) software.

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information Systems, or related field
• At least one (1) year of experience in geographic information systems, engineering, management information systems or related field.

Required Licenses or Certifications

* Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
