GIS Technician - 1000 Hours

This position is responsible for providing technical support for department GIS operations.

Minimum RequirementsBaccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Post-secondary education or experience which provides the expertise required to perform effectively the functions of the position may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
One year of experience in the occupational field, sufficient to understand the major duties of the position. This position requires practical knowledge of standard GIS procedures and tools, obtained through formal training, coursework, or on-the-job experience. Tasks such as updating layers, digitizing features, or creating maps require a basic understanding of GIS functionality and spatial data types, as well as attention to detail and consistency. Relevant experience and/or education may include: Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, or QGIS. Experience conducting data entry or updates based on source documents, aerial imagery, or GPS data. Experience in roles where accuracy, consistency, and the following procedures were critical: surveying, utility mapping, environmental fieldwork, or data management.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
Duties/Responsibilities- Enters documented land transactions and related data into digital computer files using appropriate software applications.
- Generates parcel linework using COGO entry, bearing and distance, azimuth and direction angle; generates various curve types using tangential and non-tangential methods.
- Performs document research as required to effect mapping processes generated through legal descriptions, deeds, and ordinances.
- Implements automated map clearing routines and performs quality control audits of CAD drawings.
- Performs field data gathering.
- Maintains record files.
- Converts data between CAD and GIS file formats.
- Runs and edits scripts in CAD and batch files to distribute drawings to network locations.
- Generates and edits object attribute data for linking tax account and land parcel relationships.
- Provides training and technical support to other staff.
- Provides oversight and functional direction of assigned contractor daily activities.
- Develops and maintains documentation of standards, procedures and workflow.
- Troubleshoots technical issues related to software use.
- Performs related duties.
