This position will serve as a senior GIS Specialist in the Mapping Section of the Operations Program Management Unit in Raleigh and is responsible for developing and maintaining mapping products and fulfilling mapping requests that support the Department of Transportation, State Legislature, and travelling public. The Mapping Section uses Esri products like ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online to update and maintain various GIS data and maps, including County Maintenance Maps, NC Truck Route Maps and interactive online mapping products. The section collaborates with customers and project teams to create new and custom mapping solutions for transportation and maintenance needs.

The position involves training staff, maintaining documentation, and working independently. With appropriate training, the position provides a pathway to overseeing the prestigious North Carolina State Transportation Map project.

The Operations Program Management Unit is a diverse group that provides Asset Management, administrative guidance, GIS and mapping services to support the Division of Highway field operations, based on sound engineering practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in utilizing ESRI products including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online and using GIS principles, practices, and methodologies used in production of static and interactive mapping products.
  • Knowledge and understanding of highway and bridge maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability in balancing work on multiple priorities to meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Experience in maintaining detailed documentation, and training others.
  • Experience planning, tracking and completing projects independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide customer service and communicate with technical or engineering staff as well as the general public.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
