THE POSITION
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist is the entry-level classification in the professional GIS series, responsible for performing a variety of technical and analytical duties in support of the City’s GIS program. Incumbents in this class collect, manage, and analyse spatial data, design and produce maps and visualisations, and maintain GIS databases to ensure accuracy and reliability. They assist in converting existing geographic and facilities data into GIS-compatible formats, perform quality control and assurance, and develop automated tools to improve efficiency. GIS Specialists also provide technical support to City staff, create custom queries and reports, and contribute to the ongoing development of GIS applications that enhance City operations. This class is distinguished from the GIS Applications Analyst by the complexity of assignments, with the latter performing advanced system development and maintenance requiring a deeper application of GIS principles and theories.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the GIS Specialist role is expected to manage and analyse spatial data, maintain GIS databases, and design maps and visualisations to support City operations. Applicants should have experience with spatial data collection, conversion, and analysis, as well as the ability to produce accurate maps and analytical products that support decision-making. Candidates are expected to demonstrate initiative, creativity, and problem-solving skills while communicating and collaborating effectively with City staff and stakeholders. A bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, computer science, engineering, or a related field and at least one year of professional GIS experience are required. Candidates should be prepared to learn and adapt within the City’s GIS career track, contributing to spatial data initiatives in planning, development, and public service.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in geographic information systems (GIS), geography, computer science, engineering, information technology or a closely related field is required. 
AND at least one (1) year of professional experience working with GIS software, spatial data, and mapping applications.
Experience with software systems currently used by the City: Accela Civic Platform, ePermitHub, New World ERP, Active Net, Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD, Chameleon, eScribe Agenda Management, GoGov CRM, Laserfiche, Maintstar Asset Management, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, NEOGOV, Simpplr, Smartsheet, and Tyler's New World ERP. 

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Technology Services is responsible for the centralized design, maintenance, security and support of the City’s communication infrastructure, computer network, telephone/radio systems, and applications to ensure the continued viability and sustainability of citywide technology assets, including computer hardware, software, networks, telecommunications, and audio/visual equipment.
