GIS Specialist – Valencia Regional Emergency Communications Center (VRECC)
Location: Valencia County, New Mexico
Employment Type: Full-Time, Regular
Pay Range: $31.08 – $39.96 per hour (Pay Grade K)
Reports To: Human Resources Manager
About the Role
VRECC is seeking a skilled GIS Specialist to support our mission of providing accurate, reliable, and life-saving public safety communications. In this role, you’ll manage and maintain GIS data critical to emergency response operations, prepare our agency for NG911 and ESInet, and provide training and expertise to public safety staff. This is an opportunity to make a direct impact on community safety while working with cutting-edge geospatial systems.
Key Responsibilities
- GIS Data Management: Maintain geodatabases, assign addresses, digitize and edit features, ensure data integrity, and meet state accuracy requirements.
- Mapping & Visualization: Create and update maps for emergency response, boundaries, and addressing; maintain CAD/MDT maps; develop web-based mapping tools.
- System Administration: Monitor and troubleshoot GIS systems, manage licenses, and support software installations.
- Decision Support: Perform spatial analysis, generate reports and maps, and provide input for planning, technology, and policy decisions.
- Collaboration & Training: Train staff on CAD mapping, serve as GIS liaison for partner agencies, and participate in emergency management exercises.
- Automation & Innovation: Use scripting/programming to automate processes and improve efficiency.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate degree in Geography, Emergency Services Management, Public Administration, Public Safety, or related field (preferred).
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of GIS-related work; equivalent combinations of education and experience accepted (total of 4 years).
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS and geospatial databases.
- Strong cartography, data analysis, and map design abilities.
- Understanding of NG911 technologies, CAD systems, and addressing standards.
- Scripting/programming for GIS automation is a plus.
- Other Requirements:
- Must pass a national fingerprint-based criminal history check (every 5 years).
- Pre-employment drug screening required.
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license.
