GIS Specialist I

This is a entry-level specialist, full-time position within the City’s Technology & Innovation Department. The GIS Specialist I performs professional-level geospatial work, including maintaining and enhancing the City’s enterprise GIS datasets, producing complex maps and spatial analysis, supporting system integrations, and managing GIS-related projects. This position collaborates closely with multiple City departments to support operational, planning, and strategic initiatives through accurate geospatial data and analysis.
Examples of Work- Perform advanced spatial analysis and create GIS datasets, maps, reports, dashboards, and exhibits to support City projects and decision-making.
- Perform data collection, field assignments, and spatial analysis for engineering, planning, infrastructure, and public safety initiatives.
- Collect, process, and maintain GPS and mobile mapping data for City assets and other spatial datasets.
- Maintain utility, infrastructure, and land-based GIS data by acquiring source documents, updating records, checking topology and data integrity, and logging changes.
- Assess and fulfill internal and external GIS data requests; apply GIS principles to support efficient project management and strategic outcomes.
- Administer desktop GIS software, perform system updates, install service packs and patches, and provide user support for GIS applications, hardware, and databases.
- Manage GIS-related projects, ensuring proper resource allocation, timeline adherence, and successful delivery of project objectives.
- Assist all City departments with cartographic products, spatial data creation, analysis needs, and development of GIS-based solutions using quality control standards.
- Coordinate with departments to ensure documentation and workflows support accurate, up-to-date GIS data maintenance.
- Customize GIS applications, maintain departmental datasets, update City map books, and create AGOL/Portal maps and apps for internal and public use.
EDUCATION& EXPERIENCE
- Operate and maintain specialized GIS equipment including plotters, GPS units, software, and related supplies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Subject to 24-hour recall.
Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, GIS, Computer Science, Urban Planning, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. One (1) year of relevant professional GIS experience, including use of ArcGIS Desktop/Pro, ArcGIS Online/Enterprise, GPS data collection, and spatial analysis.
