DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
This position requires considerable independent judgment and is responsible for entering and maintaining GIS data as it pertains to the Public Works Department. Responsibilities include data conversion, verifying field work from a variety of sources and ensuring accuracy of existing data.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains and collects GIS data including water, sewer, and other utilities/assets. Incorporates engineering as-built data and field data utilizing AutoDesk, ArcGIS (ESRI), and other appropriate technology.
  • Conducts research, understands, analyzes and produces maps, drawings, GIS data, and related materials to locate structures, property lines, utility locations, and other areas.
  • Maintains databases of drawings, data, and other materials to ensure accuracy and ease of retrieval.
  • Performs field work, including: verifying structure locations; holding survey instruments; and performing related tasks.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Computers and technology;
  • Research methods;
  • Applicable equipment;
  • Asset management, construction, operations and maintenance principles;
  • Basic programming knowledge;
  • Software specific knowledge (ArcGIS, AutoDesk, Microsoft products);
  • Customer service principles.

SKILLS:

  • Editing and updating utility GIS data to City specifications;
  • Conducting research;
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public and others sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction;
  • Project management;
  • Analytical and critical thinking.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Associate’s degree in related field; or, High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and 2 years of GIS and AutoCAD experience; or, all required certification(s); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.

POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS:
Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and a drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act but not those legalized under Michigan law prior to start date.
