Are you passionate about mapping, data, and technology that directly supports a community? The City of Cottonwood Heights is seeking a skilled and motivated GIS Specialist to play a key role in maintaining and advancing the City's Geographic Information Systems.

What You'll Do:

The GIS Specialist performs a variety of technical and professional duties, including but not limited to:

  • Utilize ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related software to develop, update, and maintain spatial data and GIS layers
  • Review, verify, modify, and correct GIS data using research, field verification, and comparison with as-built engineering drawings
  • Conduct field data collection using Trimble GPS equipment and ArcGIS Field Maps to locate, measure, and map city infrastructure
  • Synchronize GIS field collection databases with master GIS databases and perform database organization and maintenance
  • Digitize new and existing maps, plats, property boundaries, infrastructure features, and planning or engineering data
  • Research plats, property records, and legal descriptions to determine accurate property locations, boundaries, and dimensions
  • Produce custom digital and hard-copy maps and reports for city staff, officials, and the public
  • Assemble and integrate GIS data from GPS surveys, utilities, county records, and state and federal agencies
  • Coordinate with inspectors and city departments to integrate water, sewer, stormwater, street, and utility data into the GIS system
  • Perform GIS system maintenance tasks including scheduled backups, data security measures, and plotter maintenance
  • Maintain and update interactive GIS maps on the city website and coordinate access with the website manager
  • Provide customer service by assisting employees and the public with GIS data requests and determining appropriate map or report formats
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to the GIS Intern, including task instruction, workflow support, and skill development (non-supervisory)
  • Coordinate with the City Emergency Manager and partner agencies as part of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during drills and real emergencies
  • Perform related duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will demonstrate many of the following skills and attributes:

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate, high-quality GIS data
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks while meeting deadlines
  • Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot GIS, GPS, and data-related issues
  • Experience working with infrastructure, utility, or municipal GIS data (water, sewer, stormwater, streets, or similar systems)
  • Ability to translate technical GIS data into clear, user-friendly maps, visuals, and reports for a variety of audiences
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented, cross-departmental environment
  • Willingness to perform occasional fieldwork in support of data collection and verification
  • Strong customer service mindset when working with city staff, officials, and the public
  • Interest in mentoring and supporting the development of a GIS intern in a non-supervisory role
  • Ability to remain adaptable and responsive in time-sensitive situations, including emergency response and EOC activations

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, or a closely related field, with an emphasis or certificate in GIS; and
  • Two (2) years of professional experience performing GIS-related duties similar to those described above

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of GIS systems, database management, and computerized mapping software (ESRI ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Enterprise/Server)
  • Familiarity with GPS data collection, surveying practices, State Plane Coordinate Systems, and map interpretation
  • Ability to research plats, legal descriptions, and property records
  • Skill in using Trimble GPS equipment and related field collection tools
  • Ability to analyze data, troubleshoot GIS/GPS equipment, and ensure data accuracy and integrity
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and provide effective customer service to employees and the public

Special Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License
  • Must complete designated FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) and emergency management training within the first two (2) months of employment, including:
    • IS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System
    • IS-200: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
    • IS-700: Introduction to National Incident Management System
    • IS-922: Applications of GIS for Emergency Management
