GIS Specialist

Harris Miller Miller & Hanson Inc. (HMMH), a leader in transportation environmental consulting, seeks a GIS Specialist to join our growing Aviation Environmental & Sustainability Group. This is a remote or hybrid position out of our Burlington, MA office.
You will contribute to noise and air quality studies, sustainability planning, environmental impact mitigation, regulatory compliance, and public engagement for airport projects worldwide. HMMH, founded in 1981, has a proven track record of delivering expert environmental solutions to over 200 airports.
Position Responsibilities
- Use your quantitative skills to analyze data to determine noise and air quality results
- Find creative, technically sound, and appropriate solutions to technical problems
- Participate in data collection, including measurement trips
- Actively communicate with project team members and clients to contribute toward delivering high-quality technical documentation
- Assist clients in compiling aircraft operations, correspondence, and land use data
- Translate complex spatial data into accessible cartographic visuals and narratives for diverse audiences
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
- BA, BS, or MS in a technical field (aerospace/aviation, physics, math, engineering, environmental sciences, or other technical fields)
- 2–6 years of experience in a similar field
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro for spatial data analysis; experience with ArcGIS Online and geodatabase management preferred
- Understanding of coordinate systems, projections, and spatial data formats
- Strong writing skills and ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
- Demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative communication skills
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Demonstrated ability to design clear, accurate, and visually compelling maps using ArcGIS Pro
- Understanding of cartographic principles including color theory, symbology, scale, and layout design
- Experience applying appropriate coordinate systems and projections for spatial accuracy
Desired Experience
- Data management and programming experience (specifically SQL, Python)
- Demonstrated experience supporting team presentations and public meeting participation
- Interest in acoustics, air quality, aviation, and environmental issues
- Experience with ModelBuilder or ArcPy scripting for automation and analysis
- Familiarity with remote sensing data, LiDAR, or spatial interpolation techniques
- Use of StoryMaps or dashboard creation for public engagement and reporting
- Knowledge of accessibility standards in cartographic design (e.g., colorblind-friendly palettes, legible fonts)
