GIS Specialist 3/Data Analyst

GIS Analyst

The Georgia Department of Public Health is the lead agency entrusted by the people of the state of Georgia with the ultimate responsibility for the health of communities and the entire population.

The agency is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of GIS Specialist 3/Data Analyst within the Division of Health Protection/EPI Section/OHIP.

Job Responsibilities
Under broad supervision, collects and interprets geographic information provided by geodetic surveys, aerial photos and satellite data. Analyzes, evaluates, measures and records geospatial data using geographic information systems software and related hardware and software specific to the area of assignment. Creates or maintains GIS databases and cartographic products.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs and develops digital maps of geospatial data using ArcGIS Desktop for the purpose of supporting department's business operations, programs and strategic planning.
  • Develop and maintain spatial databases including File Geodatabases (GDB), and SQL Server Geodatabases.
  • Designs digital maps to be served through the OASIS/Mapping Tool. (https://oasis.state.ga.us)
  • Performs data analysis and interpretation using other non-GIS tools such as SPSS.
  • Handles mapping/data requests for the Department of Public Health.
  • Installs and updates GIS related hardware and software (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Pro) for the department as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in geography, cartography, geology, forestry or a closely related field from an accredited college or university AND One year of experience in the area of assignment

OR

One year of experience required at the lower level GIS Spec 2 (LSP061) or position equivalent.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Geography, Geosciences, Environmental Science, Public Health or relevant field.
  • 4+ year experience with ArcGIS Desktop and/or ArcGIS Pro.
  • Proficiency with other ESRI products such as ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of demographics, statistics and spatial analysis and statistical programs such as SPSS.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL Server.
  • Strong technical communication skills.
  • Proactively demonstrate new ideas and innovation.
