GIS Sensing Specialist IV

The GIS Specialist IV will be responsible for providing geospatial support to client research staff, cooperators, and partners. The individual will focus on research projects related to landscape conservation and connectivity along the international border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in south Texas, as well as research projects examining coastal wetland responses to sea-level rise and climate change. The role involves conducting spatial data analyses, developing new spatial data from remotely sensed data, producing publication-ready figures and tables, and preparing FGDC compliant metadata for data releases. The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or Ecology with an emphasis on geographic information systems or remote sensing, along with 3-6 years of experience in a research setting. Strong knowledge of geospatial analysis techniques, remote sensing theory, data management, and excellent communication skills are essential. Proficiency in oral and written English-language communication is also required.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for GIS Specialist IV: $68,000

Pay commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Provide geospatial support to client research staff, cooperators, and partners.
  • Assume a leadership role in preparing for and facilitating meetings with partners.
  • Conduct spatial data analyses to spport ecological research projects. Develop/conduct approximately 4–6 spatial data analyses per month.
  • Develop new spatial data from remotely sensed data. Generate approximately 2–3 classifications per month.
  • Produce publication-ready figures and tables stemming from data analyses.
  • Prepare FGDC compliant metadata for all deliverables and data releases.
  • Perform a review of scientific literature relevant to remote sensing, GIS analyses, and the target landscapes and ecosystems as needed.
  • Document technical and procedural methodologies for creating and maintaining datasets and performing analyses in a publication-ready format.
  • Participate in virtual and in-person meetings as needed.
  • Contribute to the writing and preparation of reports and journal articles regarding research efforts.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or Ecology with an emphasis on geographic information systems or remote sensing.
  • At least 3–6 years of experience working in a research setting.
  • Common geospatial analysis techniques, including site optimization, buffering, spatial queries, spatial joins, and zonal statistics.
  • Remote sensing theory, including spectral reflectance characteristics, spectral indices, land use land cover classification, pixel-based classifications, object-based classifications, and accuracy assessment of classifications.
  • Light detection and ranging (lidar) data analyses.
  • Knowledge of geospatial datums and coordinate systems.
  • Data management and map production skills.
  • Familiarity with FGDC metadata standards and development.
  • Experience in public data releases, figure and table preparation.
  • Documentation of technical and procedural methodologies for geospatial analyses.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively within a group and with external partners.
  • Proficient in oral and written English-language communication.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
