NATURE OF WORK: The GIS Intern, under the supervision of the GIS Administrator, supports the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) through data maintenance, analysis, and application development. This internship emphasizes professional learning and mentorship while providing hands-on experience with enterprise GIS systems, modern mapping technologies, and cross-departmental projects. Interns will update and improve geospatial datasets, build and maintain web maps/applications, and assist with GIS projects that serve City departments and the community.

- Update, edit, and maintain GIS datasets to ensure accuracy, consistency, and usability.
- Assist in designing, building, and deploying web maps, dashboards, and applications in ArcGIS Online.
- Support departmental projects by producing maps, graphics, and spatial data analysis.
- Research, compile, and validate spatial and tabular data from internal and external sources.
- Apply quality control practices and document updates to maintain data integrity.
- Provide user support for GIS applications and assist staff with data requests.
- Manage an assigned capstone project from initiation to delivery, including planning, communication with stakeholders, and final delivery.
- Participate in regular check-ins with the GIS Administrator to review progress and goals.
- Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and accountability in all assignments.
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and supervisor.
- Apply foundational knowledge of GIS principles, cartography, coordinate systems, data projections, and spatial data management.
- Experience with or exposure to Esri ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related tools).
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
- Ability to manage tasks independently while working collaboratively in a team environment.
- Organizational and time management skills to balance routine work with project deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in learning, problem-solving, and applying GIS technology to real-world challenges.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSURE
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Colorado Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Enrolled in a degree or certificate program with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Urban Planning, or a related program.
- Basic experience with Esri ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or related applications) through coursework, projects, or prior work.
- Basic experience with Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Preferred:
- Exposure to Python, Java, or other programming languages through coursework or projects.
- Familiarity with GPS data collection, GIS standards, terms, principles, and mapping.
- Experience with web mapping, dashboards, or application development (ArcGIS Online, Experience Builder, or similar).
- Familiarity with data management, analysis, and visualization.
- Experience with open-source GIS tools (e.g., QGIS) is a plus.

The employee is also required to kneel, squat, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis. Work is generally performed in an office setting. Work is generally performed during standard office hours with flexibility for class schedules.
