GIS Intern
Position Overview:
The purpose of this classification is to assist in creating, editing, maintaining, and manipulating data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases, using a variety of hardware and software, for County agencies, cities, and the general public.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Digitizes information while in the office or a field environment; creates, manipulates, and maintains databases; compares/QC zoning information, and tax digest; creates ESRI ArcGIS Pro projects.
- Enters plat information; receives instructions well from GIS Manager and can minimize issues and/or errors while collecting or editing data.
- Plots “E” and “D” size maps; prints maps; changes plotter paper and ink.
- Edits parcels in County coverage; creates new parcels with guidance.
- Adds metadata to authoritative datasets.
- Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; ensures accuracy of entered data and makes corrections when needed; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, or other software programs.
- Communicates with supervisor, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Operates a scanner and uses various scanner software.
- Regular and routine attendance at work is required as an hourly team member working 24-32 hours/week.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Answers the telephone; takes messages; re-files plats and maps;
- On occasion will work in physically demanding conditions, performing data collection and editing outdoors in potential extreme weather or a hazardous environment such as wetlands.
- Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An active 3rd or 4th year student working on earning a degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, or closely related field; augmented with experience and/or training in utilizing ESRI ArcGIS Pro, Windows computer, and iOS Tablet; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Data Collection/Editing: Requires the ability to collect, edit, review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well established policies, procedures and standards.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.
Mathematical/Spreadsheet Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations involving basic algebraic principles and formulas in Excel, and basic geometric principles and calculations. Aware of basic data standards, such as the difference between data fields configured in Double and Float.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
