PROJECT/ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION
Duration: For hours budgeted up to 1,000 hours (Paid Internship)
Work Hours/Schedule: < 20 hours per week. Schedule will depend on intern's school schedule.
Under general supervision from the Agency’s GIS Manager, the GIS Intern performs a variety of technical work in support of Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency’s Geographical Information System (GIS) daily operational tasks. This position prepares, maintains, converts, collects, and updates the Agency’s GIS database.

Examples of Duties
Responsibilities may include:
- Assist the GIS department as needed.
- Working basic knowledge of ArcGIS software.
- Update a variety of geodatabases in the maintenance of GIS applications.
- Enter data into GIS data tables.
- Generate GIS products such as maps, graphics, and reports.
- Participate in department meetings.
- Operate GIS hardware including large format plotters and scanners.
- Perform other duties as required.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Positions within this class require light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 20 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

Interns must be currently enrolled at a University, Community College, Trade school, High School, or comparable program.
Eligibility
In order to qualify for any of the Agency’s Internship Program, the candidate needs to meet the following criteria:
a) All candidates must be students currently enrolled in a high school, community college, undergraduate, or graduate degree program, or a graduate of any of these schools/programs within one year, to be eligible for an internship. A high school student must have a valid high school work permit (or be able to obtain one) or must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
b) Must have a current cumulative overall GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
c) Must be able to be lawfully employed in United States.
d) Must apply for a specific available internship opportunity.
e) Able to be interviewed and accepted by SCV Water.
f) Able to pass the necessary pre-employment background checks.
g) Able to commit to an assignment for no less than 60 days.
h) Able to meet the specific job requirements related to working schedule, location, transportation, and dress code.
i) Able to successfully complete new hire onboarding and safety training.
j) Must be willing to adhere to the Agency’s policies and procedures, departmental rules and regulations, and all safety rules and regulations.

4) references whom staff can contact regarding the applicant’s skills, knowledge, and work abilities. Letters of recommendation from instructors from which the educational institute’s candidate is currently enrolled will be accepted as references.
