  • Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour
  • Schedule: Up to 29 hours per week
  • Duration: Up to 90 days (Summer 2026)

About the Opportunity

The City of Sandy Springs is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GIS Intern for Summer 2026 to support our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program within a municipal environment. This in-person position is ideal for students or recent graduates who want hands-on experience working with Planning and Zoning data, web maps, and field data collection supporting city operations.

The GIS Intern will work under the supervision of the GIS Manager and collaborate with GIS staff, Community Development, and other city departments on a variety of mapping and data projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Edit and maintain existing GIS datasets, with a primary focus on Planning and Zoning layers
  • Conduct field-based data collection using established methodologies, GPS, and other equipment.
  • Assist with editing and updating GIS datasets for additional city departments as assigned.
  • Create and maintain online maps and applications using ArcGIS Online and related Esri tools.
  • Perform data entry, quality control, and documentation to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
  • Support GIS staff on ongoing projects and special mapping initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed (Spring 2026) a degree or certificate in Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, or a closely related field.
  • Foundational knowledge of GIS principles and hands-on experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro.
  • Foundational understanding of Planning and Zoning concepts.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Online and basic web mapping workflows.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry, with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to interact professionally with staff across departments.
  • Ability to work independently while accepting direction and feedback from supervisors.

Schedule and Work Environment

  • Onsite position based in Sandy Springs, GA.
  • Up to 29 hours per week, typically between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Internship duration is up to 90 days during Summer 2026.
  • When possible, the work schedule may be adjusted to accommodate the intern’s academic or class schedule.

Work is primarily performed in an office setting using standard computer and GIS software, with occasional fieldwork for data collection. Fieldwork may involve walking on uneven terrain and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to compile, organize, analyze, and interpret spatial and tabular data.
  • Ability to accurately enter, edit, and maintain geographic data using Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, GIS software, and field data collection tools; willingness to learn new mapping or GPS technologies.
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions, communicate clearly in oral and written form, and prepare brief reports or documentation.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations related to spatial measurements, coordinate conversions, and data validation.
  • Ability to apply logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in real-world GIS scenarios.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, adapt to changing priorities, and work effectively in a collaborative, project-driven environment.

Physical and ADA-Related Requirements

  • Ability to exert light physical effort, including frequent standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or move files, field equipment, or materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Sufficient visual ability to distinguish colors, shapes, and details on maps and computer screens.
  • Sufficient auditory and verbal skills to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Willingness to work in both office and outdoor environments, with appropriate safety precautions and equipment provided for fieldwork.
