Description

Interns with the City of College Station will be exposed to a variety of functions, operations and processes related to providing essential municipal services to citizens and visitors to the city.   Interns will have the opportunity to shadow and assist city staff with a variety of projects and processes as they function in their individual departments.  The Intern will have firsthand experience observing with city staff in day to day duties as they manage multiple demands, respond to a variety of questions and concerns, as well as serve the community in different formats (e.g., field, electronic and public form).

Principal Duties

Principal Intern Duties (all interns):

  1. Learn the overall concept of public service as a municipality, including the priorities, limitations, expectations, and other aspects of public service.
  2. Rotate assignments within a department to develop an understanding of the operational components necessary, possibly including customer service, scope of services, data capture and reporting, process review and other related activities.  
  3. Gain an understanding of the City’s current business tools/internal software (ie. Munis, City Works, etc.) to complete various tasks, assignments, or other project related steps.   
  4. Appropriately engage with city staff and customers, maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professional behavior while representing/participating with the city in meetings, presentations or events.  
  5. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Department Specific Project Duties (based on assignment):

  1. Gain an understanding of how properties develop, including the rules and regulations involved, as well as learning how the development review process works.
  2. Learn how GIS is used in a municipality; learn GIS, cartographic and data management skills to create data, maps, and reports to assist staff and/or customers; learn how to problem solve and resolve challenges by utilizing GIS; learn how to research properties and development processes through GIS; learn how to maintain, update, and retrieve information for various GIS datasets including geodatabases, shapefiles and layers within a spatial database engine (SDE); learn how to develop and maintain procedure manuals, metadata, specifications and other documentation for GIS activities and datasets.
Qualifications

Minimum:    

Currently enrolled in an accredited college degree/program relevant to the intern opportunity (Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, etc). Experience and/or advanced studies related to field of study, with understanding of municipal functions/services. Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills, with strong verbal & written communication abilities. Previous experience or knowledge of data gathering and record keeping techniques. 

Supplemental Information

Term:  Summer 2026

Hours:  20-30 hours/week; depending on availability and internship requirement
