Under general direction, the GIS Intern performs complex technical duties related to the creation, operation, and maintenance of the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS). This includes CAD drafting, GIS data entry, graphic editing, spatial analysis, and the production of maps and reports. The GIS Intern also provides technical assistance to various City departments and supports the development and maintenance of GIS applications and data systems. Minimum 15 hours per week for a year. Part-time employees cannot exceed 1000 hours within a fiscal year.
Representative Duties- Develops, maintains, and updates GIS databases and applications.
- Creates custom maps and reports for City departments, public meetings, and external agencies.
- Performs spatial analysis and quality control of geospatial data.
- Uses GIS and CAD software to create and edit maps and engineering drawings.
- Collaborates with departments to translate user needs into GIS solutions.
- Provides training and technical support for City staff using GIS tools.
- Coordinates with outside agencies and consultants on data sharing and integration.
- Installs and maintains GIS-related software and hardware; performs system backups.
- Documents metadata and ensures the integrity and accuracy of datasets.
- Prepares graphics and exhibits for public presentations and staff reports.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
ESRI GIS software including ArcGIS Pro, ArcView, ArcMap, and ArcSDE.
AutoCAD and other drafting software.
Principles of cartography, geography, spatial analysis, and GIS database management.
Information Technology systems and basic network configurations.
Municipal operations and functions.
Applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to GIS and data privacy.
Report writing and recordkeeping techniques.
Ability to:
Utilize ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcView) and AutoCAD to create, update, and analyze
geospatial data and engineering drawings.
Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot GIS databases, applications, and related hardware/software systems.
Perform spatial analysis, quality control checks, and ensure data accuracy and integrity for City projects.
Create clear, accurate maps, reports, graphics, and exhibits for internal and external use, including publicpresentations and staff reports.
Interpret and apply principles of cartography, geography, and municipal operations in the development of
GIS solutions.
Document and maintain metadata for datasets, adhering to established standards and best practices.
Provide technical support and basic GIS training to City staff and coordinate effectively with internal
departments, consultants, and external agencies.
Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, and translate user needs into practical GIS
deliverables.
Manage time effectively to complete assignments independently or collaboratively under general
supervision.
Understand and comply with applicable federal, state, and local GIS-related regulations and data privacy
requirements.
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Applicants must have an associate's degree or higher in GIS, geography, computer science, or a related field. Two years of GIS operations experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Time Commitment
Minimum 15 hours per week for a year. Part-time employees cannot exceed 1000 hours within afiscal year.
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment.
