General Statement of Duties
This non-exempt, non-benefited, temporary position is responsible for assisting the GIS department in various projects and tasks. Performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received
Works under direct supervision of the GIS Manager with interaction and coaching from other GIS staff.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The listed functions may be modified with additions and deletions, or changed to achieve District goals and objectives:
- Complete various GIS assignments and engineering related tasks, including field work.
- Research records, including but not limited to, easements, as-builts and plats, as necessary.
- Read and interpolate legal descriptions and exhibits as needed.
- Digitize as-built and easement data and prepare maps in ArcGIS Pro.
- Aid in the development of topologically and geometrically sound network representation of the district’s assets and operations.
- Create various map products with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Portal for Enterprise.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook Knowledge of digitizing and data manipulation procedures for GIS.
- Basic knowledge of general construction and engineering principles.
- Ability to interpret and use information from maps, plans, specifications, regulations, blueprints, and technical documentation.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, organize activities in order to complete tasks in accordance with priorities, address multiple demands and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with broad direction and limited supervision from supervisor.
- Scripting and automation skills in python or R are beneficial but not required.
Qualifications / Experience
- Must be working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Geography, Engineering, Planning, or another closely related field with completion of some GIS coursework.
- Experience with ESRI software such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with a Motor Vehicle Record acceptable to the District’s insurance company.
- Monday through Thursday 20 hours per workweek. GIS department hours are 7:00 am-3:30 pm so hours need to be worked during that time. This is an in-person program with no opportunity for remote or telework unless weather conditions prohibit travel to and from the office.
- Work is performed primarily in an office setting; however, may be performed on construction sites where there may be exposure to dust, noise, traffic and moving construction equipment; and/or at a wastewater treatment facility where noise, irritants, dust, dirt, bacteria, hazardous chemicals/air/materials and fumes are present.
- Work may take place outside in all weather conditions. May be exposed to risks typically associated with working around water, chemicals, electricity and other man-made and natural hazards.
- Full range of body movements including stooping, twisting, kneeling, bending, leaning, reaching, climbing (heights), stretching and working in awkward positions. May stand for extended periods of time.
- Light physical effort required by handling objects up to 20 pounds occasional and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
- Must be able to operate equipment, read, record and interpret information. Must be able to communicate with other employees and the public.
