The City of Marquette GIS internship is focused on mapping and documenting features in the City as needed. Interns will use GPS technology to collect precise geospatial points and capture photos of features, contributing to a comprehensive digital database. Responsibilities include fieldwork, data entry, and GIS software use to organize and analyze collected data. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, comfortable with outdoor work, and have basic GIS or GPS experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIE

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following:

·         Conduct fieldwork within the City limits using GPS/GIS technology.

·         Capture clear, high-quality photos for documentation.

·         Enter collected data into a digital database accurately and efficiently.

·         Ensure data integrity and attention to detail in all mapping and documentation tasks.

·         Maintain equipment, including GPS devices and cameras, ensuring proper functionality.

·         Collaborate with team members to ensure consistency and completeness of the database.

·         Follow safety protocols and guidelines while working outdoors in various weather conditions.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Performs other related functions as assigned.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED

  • Standard computer software includes word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Telephone, standard duplicating equipment.
  • Standard GIS, and GPS equipment and materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIRED

  • Knowledge and skill in utilizing GIS software such as ArcGIS online, ArcGIS Pro.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of various computer software programs.
  • Required training includes course work and training in Geographical Information Systems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lifting 75 lbs maximum and frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 40 lbs. May be requested to lift up to 150 lbs with the assistance of another person.
  • Frequent standing, walking and sitting.
  • Occasional driving.
  • Must be capable of using hand (s)/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation,   pushing, pulling and operating controls.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, squatting and reaching.
  • Occasional climbing and grappling.
  • Ability to communicate orally in a clear manner.
  • Ability to distinguish sounds at various frequencies and volumes.
  • Ability to distinguish people or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions.
  • Ability to withstand temperature changes, traffic hazards, hazardous materials, varying noise levels and confined space in the work environment.
