Under general supervision of the IT Director or designee, the GIS Intern provides technical support to the City GIS. The intern assists with the collection and maintenance of utility data, streets/Right of Way, planning, and/or parks data in support of municipal operations. This position is intended to offer hands-on experience with real GIS workflows, exposure to local government functions, and the opportunity to contribute to public infrastructure and planning projects. The internship may be tailored to meet academic requirements for credit.
This internship is hourly without benefits, with a work schedule of up to 40 hours per week over the summer break and a flexible schedule of up to 40 hours per week, as the intern's schedule permits, for the balance of the internship period, which shall not exceed six months.
- Assist with updating and maintaining GIS spatial datasets; including utilities (sanitary, storm, water, fiber), street centerlines, signage/pavement markings, right-of-way, zoning boundaries, and recorded easements.
- Collect and edit GIS data using desktop tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro) and mobile applications (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps); conduct GPS field data collection as needed.
- Digitize features from record drawings, plans, and other spatial data sources into the GIS database.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) checks on GIS data and attribute information.
- Support the creation of maps, reports, and visualizations to communicate spatial information to internal departments and the public.
- Assist in developing and maintaining web maps, dashboards, and GIS applications for internal and external use.
Periodic Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Collaborate with city staff to identify GIS needs and contribute to solutions across departments.
- Participate in team meetings and share project progress with supervisors and stakeholders.
Education/Experience
- Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a degree program in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Urban/Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Completion of at least one GIS course using ArcGIS or similar software.
Licenses/Certifications
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record for fieldwork.
Knowledge and Skills
- Proficiency with GIS desktop software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro); familiarity with ArcGIS Online, QGIS, Field Maps, or similar tools is a plus.
- Basic understanding of municipal infrastructure systems, zoning, or planning processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with attention to accuracy and detail.
- Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
- Prefer experience with GPS equipment and mobile data collection workflows.
- Prefer experience with relational databases, scripting (Python/ArcPy), or web mapping technologies.
- The work will be split between a typical office setting and field conditions associated with an outdoor environment. In some instances, personal protective equipment (PPE) may be , such as footwear, safety glasses, ear protection, hard hat, gloves and/or other gear as necessary.
- Occasional lifting/carrying of up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures, noise intensity level, vibration, mechanical, electrical, chemical and dust/fume hazards.
- May also experience wet and/or humid spaces, uneven terrain, adverse weather conditions and poorly lit locations.
- Sufficient clarity of speech, hearing, vision and other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation which enables the individual to communicate effectively.
- Must also possess manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to operate a personal computer and related equipment.
