Summary

JOB SUMMARY:
Receives on-the-job training and experience in a variety of positions and settings in the water resources department. Specific job responsibilities will be tailored to fit the individual students' needs. Intern may be assigned to water treatment, wastewater reclamation, environmental services (including laboratory), water distribution, sanitary sewer, customer service, engineering (including GIS), or finance and administration.
 

Job Duties

 

IF ASSIGNED TO GIS:  A GIS intern assists GIS team in editing and analyzing GIS data through GIS software.

Assist in field data collection and analysis using and GPS and ESRI Field Maps.

Assist with data clean-up of feature layers and spreadsheets for larger projects and asset management.

Work with GIS staff on the development and maintenance of GIS data in the DWR multiuser geodatabase

IF ASSSIGNED TO WATER TREATMENT OR WASTEWATER RECLAMATION:

Collect materials for samples and performs several types of tests.

Check calibration of chemical feed pumps every two hours.

May operate press machines, check valve settings and make adjustments as necessary.

Collects and delivers samples for lab analysis; checks equipment to assure proper operation.

IF ASSIGNED TO ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES (INCLUDING LAB):

Perform supervised tests and recording of data on water and wastewater samples.

Collect water and wastewater samples.

Perform supervised site inspections of retention ponds, detention ponds, and other various facilities.

IF ASSIGNED TO WATER DISTRIBUTION OR SANITARY SEWER:

Perform supervised repairs to water/sewer lines, test water line pressure, identify or verify nature of customer concerns.

Prepare technical field reports to assist with structure assessment and proper utility mapping.

Locate and mark buried water and sewer lines prior to construction activities.

Participate in flow monitoring, smoke testing, CCTV inspections, and technical data collection.

IF ASSIGNED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE:

Supervised water meter installation and repair.

Assist customers with inquiries over the phone and in person by maintaining account information, resolve billing issues, and answer questions regarding payments under the supervision of senior staff.

IF ASSIGNED TO ENGINEERING:

Assist engineers in planning, directing, organizing, and scheduling work for the engineering and construction team.

Assist in preparing cost estimates for proposed improvements, securing permits, and easements. May assist in land surveying required for planning and design of water infrastructure.

Assist in developing, implementing, coordinating, and maintaining of the water resources department's GIS program.

Perform supervised job site inspections.

IF ASSIGNED TO FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION

Assist the director of water resources and other DWR staff with a variety of research, calculations, presentation materials, and communication materials.

Assist the director with various administrative duties such as filing, data compiling, and correspondence.

Provide other administrative and clerical support as needed.

IF ASSIGNED TO ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES (GRAFFIC DESIGN/WATER CONSERVATION SPECILIST ASSISTANT)

Assist  Water Conservation Specialist with new ideas and concepts

Utilizes design software to generate content and graphics for a multitude of media outlets, including but not limited to social media, city website, magazines, billboards, email, and radio

Collaborate with personnel to develop educational marketing tools including reels, bill inserts, and social media posts for water conservation, stormwater, the "human water cycle", etc.

Create marketing content and campaigns for water utility themed time periods of the year such as Fix-A-Leak Week, Drinking Water Week, Water Quality Month, etc.

Work with department personnel to develop campaign graphics and content for each of the 4 levels of drought as determined by Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

Update current and also create new public service announcement content including website, billboard and radio PSA's and Boiled Water Advisory notices for various media outlets.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must be currently enrolled in high school or university in a related field of study which applies to the Water Resources Department and have recommendation from at least 1 (one) teacher or professor.

Must possess Valid Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

IF ASSIGNED TO WATER TREATMENT OR WASTEWATER RECLAMATION:

Knowledge of practices, procedures, and safety precautions involved in laboratory analysis.

Knowledge of basic chemistry, mathematics, and biology.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

IF ASSIGNED TO ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES (INCLUDING LAB):

Knowledge of the principles and practices for the safe operation of equipment and related measuring and testing devices.

Knowledge of basic chemistry, mathematics, and biology.

Knowledge of record keeping.

Ability to plot and interpret graphs.

Ability to read and interpret rules and regulations pertaining to water and wastewater sampling and testing.

Ability to distinguish colors.

IF ASSIGNED TO WATER DISTRIBUTION OR SANITARY SEWER:

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Basic knowledge of construction with ability to read construction specifications, maps, and blueprints.

IF ASSIGNED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE:

Knowledge of general office procedures including filing, bookkeeping, records maintenance, and computer operations.

IF ASSIGNED TO ENGINEERING:

Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of Civil and Sanitary Engineering as applied to major Water Resources or Public Works projects.

Knowledge of the principles and practices utilized in the inspection and testing of materials used in the construction of Civil Engineering projects and roads, bridges, and other projects.

Basic knowledge of construction with ability to read construction specifications, maps, and blueprints.

IF ASSIGNED TO FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION:

Knowledge of governmental accounting practices, graphic design, and local government policies preferred.

IF ASSIGNED TO ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES (GRAFFIC DESIGN/WATER CONSERVATION SPECILIST ASSISTANT)
