Summary of Position
JobsOhio seeks a research and analytical intern, specializing in geographic information systems, to support its mission. JobsOhio’s nationally recognized Research division is mission-critical, and an important aspect of what differentiates JobsOhio from other statewide economic development organizations. This role helps deliver customized data and geospatial analysis relevant to company decision-makers when considering investment in Ohio. Research fuels statewide marketing and business development by creating insights about what Ohio has to offer to new and existing businesses.
The GIS Intern position will provide support to other members of the Research team and to other internal clients. The Research Team provides support for client requests, but also supports strategic planning, marketing, business intelligence, due diligence, and evaluation efforts at JobsOhio. Research has grown at JobsOhio under our CEO, J.P. Nauseef and JobsOhio Board of Directors, alongside opportunities for professional development in research techniques.
The GIS Intern will have at least a basic understanding of research and analysis methods and GIS tools. Candidates should possess the ability to understand the problem or task, gather and analyze relevant data points and tell a story using charts, graphs and other formats.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilize Research Tools and Methods
- Follow research project plans and procedures while maintaining positive rapport with staff.
- Utilize new and existing public and proprietary data tools effectively.
Create Maps

- Design customized maps for internal and external audiences.
- Collect and analyze spatial data from public and proprietary sources.
- Collaborate with other teams to curate JobsOhio’s cartographic resources.
- Analyze Data
- Track and report baseline and trend analysis of a variety of data types.
- Document processes used in transforming raw data.
- Lead or participate in the production of routine research outputs.
- Share Data and Team Outputs
- Assist in electronic transfer of team outputs, to other teams within JobsOhio and the JobsOhio Network.
- Other Expectations
- Collect and curate data and reports, organize and maintain team files.
- Learn research tools, best practices and collaborate on new projects.
- Assist with analytical work for active client projects by providing data and presentation materials.
- Provide clear communication of roadblocks, opportunities, resources, to team leadership.
- Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information.
Experience Requirements
- Prior training, education or experience with data collection, tracking, analysis and presentation.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, including the ability to create maps and conduct basic spatial analysis.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to write and execute simple formulas, create charts and graphs, work with multiple tabs, and create and manipulate tables. Familiarity with basic graphic design or cartographic standards.

Education Requirements
- Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
- Preferred fields of study and/or training include GIS, geography, data analytics, public administration, graphic design, planning, business, economics, , , computer science, or urban studies.
