The City of Albemarle is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented GIS Intern to support the Planning & Community Development Department in geographic data collection, mapping, and analysis. This position provides hands-on experience in municipal GIS operations, including infrastructure mapping, asset inventory, and spatial data management.
The GIS Intern will assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date geographic information systems that support planning, development review, infrastructure management, and decision-making across multiple City departments.
Essential DutiesKey Responsibilities
- Assist with field data collection using GPS equipment to inventory public infrastructure (water, sewer, stormwater, streets, and other assets)
- Assist with creating the City’s GIS databases and mapping systems
- Conduct photo documentation and asset verification in the field
- Assist in creating and updating maps, graphics, and spatial datasets
- Support data entry, quality control, and organization of GIS and planning-related information
- Assist with document scanning, digitization, and records management
- Collaborate with Planning, Public Works, and other departments on GIS-related tasks
- Provide support for special projects, including development tracking, zoning mapping, and community engagement materials

Minimum Qualifications
- Current student or recent graduate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, or related field
- Valid driver’s license
- Basic knowledge of GIS principles and mapping concepts
- Proficiency in common computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, Adobe Suite)
- Ability to read and interpret maps, addresses, and spatial data
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in using ArcGIS (ArcGIS Pro, ArcUrban, ArcGIS Online) or similar GIS software
- Familiarity with GPS data collection tools
- Interest in municipal planning, infrastructure, or public service
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to navigate uneven terrain
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Combination of fieldwork and office-based work
