DEFINITION & CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Under direct supervision, is trained in and assists with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and engineering/mapping-related projects for District departments; performs related duties as required. The intern is responsible for executing and completing learning objectives, as defined by the intern’s cooperative education class.
Learning Goals:
- Specific Vallecitos processes and the role GIS plays in local water/water engineering;
- Team collaboration and development of processes within the work place;
- Data capture and creation, map creation, GIS web maps, etc.; entering As-Builts into Vallecitos system;
- Dashboard/Story Map creation’
- Summary project/documentation.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The position will report to the Asset Management Supervisor and train with GIS staff.
Essential Functions- Assists with data input for engineering plans, plat maps, and legal descriptions;
- Assists with spatial/surface analysis using a variety of modules and GIS software
- Assists with maintaining geographic information systems database metadata or data dictionary to support enterprise GIS efforts for the District.
- Assists with editing, creating, updating, and maintaining graphic and tabular geographic information systems data structure; helps review the integrity, quality, and accuracy of a variety of geographic information systems information and data through routine checking of information and data inputted.
- Edits and helps prepare a wide range of computerized maps and reports.
- Operates copiers and a variety of office equipment.
- Perform duties in a professional manner and works well with others or in a team setting.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with VWD Staff, outside agencies, and the public.
- Regular attendance and adherence to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
- Observes safe work practices and safety methods; performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications for the internship program require students to be enrolled in an internship/cooperative education class with an accredited college or university. Must have completed at least 1 semester of GIS classes and be working toward a GIS certification.
Typical Qualifications Include:
- Knowledge of GIS program principles, techniques, and functions; methods and techniques to develop maps and compile data;
- Knowledge of computer programs and equipment used to produce transparencies, color layouts, camera-ready artwork, print resolution, vector and raster images; advanced techniques used in graphic art and computer graphics;
- Knowledge of GIS hardware and software, such as ArcPro and Portal;
- Ability to learn about water and wastewater appurtenances such as pipes, valves, meters, manholes, etc.;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees;
- Ability to read and utilize maps; process and analyze various forms of data; perform calculations for mapping; read and interpret maps; prepare accurate maps and charts from multiple layers of data.
In general, interns are expected to be professional and conduct themselves in a manner that positively represents Vallecitos Water District.
Supplemental InformationTERMS AND CONDITIONS
This position is expected to work 8 – 15 hours per week but may be adjusted based on credit requirements. Internships are for a specific semester that runs in tandem with the official internship/cooperative education class in which they are enrolled; a typical duration is 16 weeks. Positions are terminated upon semester completion. Interns do not receive wages; insurance benefits; retirement benefits; or personal leave.
