Prince William County Department of Information Technology’s Geospatial Technology Services (GTS) program is an established enterprise GIS that has long supported county government operations, residents, and businesses for decades. About This Role:
We are seeking an experienced GIS Developer to be part of the Systems and Solutions Team, one of four functional teams within the Geospatial Technology Services (GTS) Program. The GTS Program is the county’s central GIS and is within the Enterprise Applications Division of the Department of Information Technology (DoIT). It is an exciting time to be part of our organization. Having completed a pioneering 21st century cloud infrastructure, DoIT is embarking on a journey to a new Digital Government Experience (GovX) and Transformation design. You can be part of a team of creative GIS and technology thinkers and innovators who are inspired by the idea of making a real difference in communities, and breaking the mold of government IT.
As a GIS Developer, you will be working closely alongside an advanced team of GIS professionals to provide GIS technical support and forward-thinking subject matter expertise. The team works collaboratively on many projects and actively provides technical guidance and exchange with one another. You should have the ability to be able to think, work, and make most decisions independently and be flexible and can successfully work with the dynamics of not just those within your team, but also external individuals and/or groups.
Some of the primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Addressing and responding to GIS service and project requests/tickets;
- Monitoring and maintaining several GIS processes and workflows;
- Troubleshooting of custom developed GIS desktop, web, and mobile tools, applications, and scripts;
- ArcGIS system administration, management, and support (including numerous virtual servers, databases, software, and licensing);
- Application/software development (programming and scripting using modern programming languages, best practices, and the Software Development Life Cycle);
- Providing advanced level GIS technical guidance, subject matter expertise, and consultation;
- Project management and planning;
- Be a strong and effective communicator and be able to deliver high-quality presentations, talk with various stakeholders to understand GIS requirements, manage expectations, and maintain positive relationships;
- Developing technical and user documentation, including architecture diagrams;
- Leading and coordinating meetings and/or work sessions for the team;
- Building and maintaining strong team unity and cohesion within your team and the other teams and groups we work with;
- Working with program leadership and key ArcGIS users to better coordinate standardization and overall better working partnership efforts;
- Driving our GIS strategic goals and objectives.

Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. and 7 years of progressive GIS technical experience working in an advanced capacity (minimally at a programmer/developer/engineer or other senior technical level).
Preferences:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field
- An advanced level of technical knowledge in the latest Esri ArcGIS suite of products
- Proficiency in modern programming and scripting languages
- Knowledge and expertise in the Software Development Life Cycle
- Developed custom desktop, web, and/or mobile applications
- Have previously worked with an advanced GIS technical team
- Worked in an enterprise GIS environment
- Project management experience
Work Schedule:
This position is classified as exempt with the expectation that the candidate will complete duties within the time frame required. Standard workweek is 37.5 hours, Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. After hours and weekend work are occasionally necessary to provide services that cannot be performed during normal business hours. This position is offered as hybrid on-site and teleworking with an expectation of in-office work at least one day a week.
This is a telework eligible position that includes in-office scheduling. This is subject to change based on the needs of the program and organization.
Starting Salary Range: $82,777.50 – $111,033.00/yr
