The GIS Coordinator is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data and cartographic output, as well as the technical work of developing and maintaining data in the system. The position works with various departments and programs within the City, as well as external stakeholders and has considerable latitude in the exercise of independent judgement and action in supporting the design, maintenance, and application of the City GIS function.
Examples of Duties- Functions as the subject matter expert for all aspects of the GIS system and its services. Ensures that information is communicated and/or maintained in an appropriate and professional manner.
- Uses ArcGIS & ESRI to maintain current and accurate geographic information and attribute data for City-owned infrastructures, zoning, outside utilities, etc.
- Uses ArcGIS to create and update complex maps and/or perform complex spatial analyses to provide decision support to various City departments.
- Maintains the geographic database for the City. This may be accomplished by digitizing, data translation from other graphic or non-graphic sources such as AutoCad, digital data collectors, database files, officially approved plans or interpreting and researching legal documents. Evaluates data set accuracy and follows through with possible corrective actions.
- Collects, interprets, and imports data from outside sources such as utility vendors, the county, local businesses, etc.
- Performs complex geographic analysis and cartographic production as it relates to the GIS system by creating maps, charts and tables that accurately and effectively communicate information and support relevant decisions.
- Creates and documents procedures for the maintenance of the data and cartographic output.
- Creates maps from collected data to visually interpret the location of City assets and non-city utilities.
- Conducts spatial analysis, performance metrics analysis, and map production to support decision-making, presentations, and reports within the City.
- Researches, assesses and proposes GIS opportunities for City departments. Trains employees on the use of GIS-related solutions.
- Consults with City departments to design, develop, document, analyze, create, test, and modify the integration of GIS components into third-party departmental software and software applications, namely police and fire.
- Ensures cartographic data for residential and commercial addresses is accurate and timely for use by Public Safety & Community Development. May also attach floor plans to commercial spaces for emergency and tactical needs.
- Ensures Public Works has accurate mapping of all city infrastructures and local utilities.
- Assist the Public Works Department with other tasks as assigned related to project management for capital improvements.
- Ensures Community Development has current zoning maps and parcel updates. May create a record of code complaints attached to addresses.
- Drives a City vehicle to perform essential functions of the position.
- Works with IT to schedule server performance monitoring and maintenance.
- May be asked to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job.
Education/Training/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, cartography, civil engineering, computer science, or related fields is required.
- Master’s degree in GIS, computer science, geography, or related fields is preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience working in a similar role with GIS software (preferably ESRI ArcGIS) is required.
- Demonstrated success in a similar position, preferably in the public sector, working with a variety of governmental departments is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must complete within 1 year of hire the FEMA certifications IS-100: Intro to ICS and IS-700: Intro to NIMS.

Physical/Environmental/Other:
- Schedule: Generally Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm in the office.
- Working Environment: Work is primarily performed indoors in a professional office environment, routinely requiring the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, etc. There is no exposure to extreme temperatures, atmospheric conditions, noise, hazards, or vibrations. Minimal field work is required.
- Physical Demands: Work is performed in a standard office environment, however, mobility to work at other computer stations located throughout the City is required. This is physically sedentary work requiring the ability to sit for prolonged periods and visual acuity to review alphanumeric data. Frequently sits, talks, & hears. Occasionally stands, walks, reaches, hands, grasps, performs repetitive motions, and performs eye/hand/foot coordination. Rarely lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, or feels.
