Department Summary
The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver's physical resources in order to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking & Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations.
Position Summary
Designs, develops, writes, implements, and maintains a centralized geographic information system that accommodates use by all departments. Identifies, documents, and analyzes work processes for the purpose of automating tasks using GIS technology. Sets up and administers networked computer workstations for GIS as well as general business applications and data communication.
In addition to GIS responsibilities, assists with space management functions, including supporting space planning, wayfinding, utilization analysis, and integration of facilities data to ensure accurate reporting and effective use of campus resources.
Digitizes and drafts advanced geographic information for producing complex maps with multiple layers and features. Troubleshoots GIS workstation issues, develops program enhancements, and performs scripting for web applications. Maintains plotter and scanner equipment, evaluates software solutions, and stays current on GIS trends and local issues. This position reports to the University Architect.
Essential Functions
In addition to following the University of Denver’s policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
GIS Program Development & Administration
- Develops and maintains enterprise GIS programs that enable advanced data analysis and map production using ESRI platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, SDE databases), programming/scripting languages, and relational databases.
- Establishes and enforces standards for GIS mapping, documentation, data storage, database design, programming practices, and overall data quality.
- Designs and implements GIS database schemas and programming standards to ensure consistency, scalability, and long-term usability.
Consultation, Planning & Project Management
- Consults with departments to define GIS and spatial data needs; evaluates requirements and develops streamlined technical solutions.
- Plans and manages GIS programming and data projects, including priorities, schedules, and deliverables, to support campus planning, facilities, and operations.
- Coordinates with stakeholders to design and implement procedures that enhance access to GIS data and improve responsiveness across the organization.
GIS Application, Tool & Data Development
- Designs and develops tools and applications for displaying, querying, and retrieving GIS data from relational databases.
- Integrates GIS data with space management, facilities systems, and wayfinding platforms, ensuring consistency across all spatial data systems.
- Implements time-saving enhancements and automation using scripting and programming languages (e.g., Python, Visual Basic, macros, SQL).
Mapping, Spatial Data & Visualization
- Creates, digitizes, and maintains complex maps and spatial datasets supporting facilities, infrastructure, utilities, buildings, roads, and campus planning.
- Produces advanced, multi-layered maps and spatial analyses, including support for 3D and integrated land-based systems.
- Determines appropriate image resolution, compression, color depth, and output formats to ensure optimal performance and visual quality across media.
Data Governance, Auditing & Quality Control
- Manages and maintains GIS databases and mapping systems to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with institutional standards.
- Audits and updates floor plans, spatial records, and related datasets to maintain accuracy for reporting, planning, and analysis.
- Ensures data integrity through quality assurance processes and adherence to established GIS standards.
Training, Support & Technical Leadership
- Provides technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance for GIS workstations, applications, and related systems.
- Develops training materials, trains users, and provides guidance to departments using GIS tools and resources.
- Conducts technical research in GIS and related databases; documents methodologies and best practices for institutional use.
Web & GIS Systems Integration
- Designs, develops, and maintains GIS-related web applications and interfaces.
- Participates in website development for GIS applications and integrated databases, including navigation structures and data presentation standards.
- Performs web scripting and programming (e.g., HTML, JavaScript, ASP) to support GIS-enabled web applications and user interaction.
Other Duties
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of GIS principles, spatial analysis, and mapping techniques.
- Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS software and related GIS applications.
- Ability to manage relational databases and integrate spatial data effectively.
- Skilled in interpreting architectural and engineering drawings for GIS use.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit for facilities and space data integration.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for GIS and data challenges.
- Effective communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize projects and manage multiple tasks independently.
- Understanding of space planning, utilization, and facilities management concepts.
- Commitment to maintaining data accuracy and quality standards in GIS systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Cartography, or related experience in the field required.
- A minimum of two years of progressive experience in programming, digitizing, and drafting maps using GIS applications is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Have specialized professional knowledge in GIS, geography, facilities management, engineering, or related fields.
- Knowledge and experience with contemporary GIS Software, including ArcGIS, ArcIMS, ArcSDE
- Must have knowledge of the use of AutoCAD and Revit and their functionality.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other university departments, engineering and surveying companies, realtors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, and disabilities.
Working Environment
- This position involves primarily indoor office work with some fieldwork. The candidate should be capable of a sedentary nature of work, demonstrating sufficient ambulatory ability to navigate the office, campus buildings, and grounds.
- The role requires auditory skills for ordinary and telephonic conversations.
- Additionally, the candidate should possess near and far visual acuity, as well as color perception, for tasks such as reading detailed maps, drawings, printed material, and computer screens, and for observing multi-dimensional physical layouts.
- Manual and finger dexterity are essential for writing and operating microcomputers and other office equipment.
- The ability to alternate between sitting and standing for extended periods is necessary to perform desk and counter work effectively.
Physical Activities
The position will require the ability to see well enough to read standard text, speak well enough to converse on the phone and in person with customers and fellow employees, hear well enough to converse on the phone and in person with customers and fellow employees, has the manual dexterity to write, and type, strength to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., needs the ability to climb stairs, stoop and move around the facilities.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 11.
Salary Rate:
The salary rate for this position is $65,146.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
