GIS Analyst

The City of Lakewood has a great opportunity for a skilled GIS Analyst. In partnership with the GIS Coordinator, this role will work with the departments across the city to deliver a broad range of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) development and maintenance duties to support enterprise-wide GIS infrastructure and services. The successful candidate will play a key role in managing data, performing spatial analysis, producing maps, and contributing insights that support various city initiatives. The ideal candidate is relationship-focused, collaborative, and able to ensure excellent technical customer service internal and external to the organization.

MAJOR TASK, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not list every function of the position.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist in the collection, processing, and maintenance of geospatial data using GIS software.
  • Perform quality checks on GIS data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Support GIS projects by creating maps, apps, charts, and visualizations for internal and public use.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to users on GIS software and data access.
  • Assist in the development and documentation of GIS procedures and standards.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot GIS-related issues and optimize workflows.

Analyst duties:

  • Creates, maintains, and troubleshoots custom data processing Python scripts to increase operations efficiency, standardize, and automate routine processes.
  • Establishes relationships and collaborates with data owners throughout the city to ensure GIS data is maintained in a consistent, high-quality manner and updates are made timely.
  • Collaborates with data owners throughout the city to identify business needs for additional GIS tools to help maintain and visualize accurate and complete data.
  • Develops, maintains, and supports custom GIS web and field applications.
  • Develops documentation and training materials to ensure standardized continuous operations.
  • Ensures that day-to-day GIS service requests are being completed in a timely and effective manner, commensurate with standard service levels and the requestor’s needs.
  • Provides technical assistance and training to users on GIS-related commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and other solutions supported by the city’s IT.
  • Stays abreast of trends and developments within the field of GIS and maintains contact with other GIS professionals to facilitate the exchange of information.
  • Uses complex data sources to perform, interpret, and execute complex geospatial tasks.
  • Is deeply proficient with the ESRI GIS suite, related tools, and licensing model.
  • Performs other similar duties and projects as assigned.

Receives general supervision from the Business Applications Supervisor (Business Transformation Division).

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Land Use, Cartography, Computer Science, or related.

Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of experience in Geographic Information Systems with three (3) years specifically related to ESRI products including ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Field Apps, AutoCAD, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and related imaging and graphic programs.
Experience developing interactive web-based mapping applications for internal and external customers using ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server software.

Licensure/Certification/Registration

A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of cartography, photogrammetry, use of photography, and GPS as applied to GIS
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments and to contribute to the collaborative team environment to meet goals and objectives.
  • Essential knowledge of the principles, practices and methodology used in developing solution-based geographic information mapping systems.
  • Preferred knowledge of business operations and applications, and their interdependencies with GIS.
  • Preferred knowledge of AI, and ML use in GIS.
  • Skill in compiling, editing and updating large geographic database files.
  • Ability to prepare and make oral presentations before large, diverse groups of people.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently both orally and in writing in a variety of professional and technical formats.
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn continuously, independently, and proactively.
  • Background (including fingerprints) and reference checks are required.

  • Must successfully complete and maintain required state or departmental physical standards and certifications.
  • Medium Work:  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Pay Range

$70,865.60-$91,998.40
