GIS Analyst I - Gas (Hybrid)

Job Summary
Dominion Energy has a GIS Analyst I open position which can be located at one of these locations: Apex, NC or PSNC Headquarters in Gastonia, NC. 

This position completes GIS analytical functions, assist supervisor and other GIS analysts with the functions related to the design, development, implementation, configuration, analysis, reporting and maintenance of specialized ESRI-based software applications used by engineering personnel for maintaining pipeline records in GIS systems and producing map and data outputs for the operation and maintenance of distribution and High Pressure systems.

Works under direction of supervisor, project lead and others in analyzing and making recommendations for model changes and workflows to streamline the input of GIS data.

Perform other duties as requested or assigned. 

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Perform spatial and data queries that are complex in nature.
  • Design and manage connections between GIS data stored in enterprise GIS database and business attribute information stored in source systems of record.
  • Operate and support GIS system hardware and software.
  • Conflate datasets from legacy location to more accurate location.
  • Review work completed by peers for quality and provide feedback.
  • Set up data filters and selections using definition queries using SQL and spatial selections.
  • Configure feature labeling and symbology.
  • Run geoprocessing spatial analysis tools.
  • Conduct records research task to support MAOP re-confirmation and data reconciliation tasks.
  • Complete miscellaneous data requests and data corrections.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (GIS, Geography, Geographical Technology, Information Systems, or closely related field); or
  • Associate degree and 2+ years directly related experience; or
  • High school diploma and 4+ years directly related experience.

Directly Related Experience includes:  Experience with Esri software, GIS systems, multi-environment GIS Solutions, software integration, web services design and development, data base design, gas, or electric design experience.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor Degree (Geography, Geographical Technology, GIS, or closely related field) and 3+ years directly related experience and
  • Experience with ArcGIS; or
  • Experience with Esri Utility Network


  • Knowledge and understanding of GIS data model i.e. features, attribution, relationships, and system configuration i.e. ArcFM interface, stored displays, auto-updaters, as-built rules.
  • Knowledge, understanding and skill to use ArcGIS applications to update and maintain company pipeline assets in GIS database.
  • Knowledge and understanding of company Standard Practices and/or pipeline industry terminology.
  • Knowledge understanding of how to create project plans and schedules.
  • Knowledge understanding and knowledge with higher skill level in the operation and use of ArcGIS, GPS & CAD solution products.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic programming and debugging skills.
  • Knowledge of how to create and develop GIS workflows and standard practices.  Skill in problem solving.
  • Knowledge and understanding of GPS and Survey practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of DOT CFR 49 part 192 codes related to record keeping HCA/Class (Transmission).  
  • Knowledge and understanding of High Consequence Areas (HCA) and DOT Class requirements.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Integrity Management Plans and associated responsibilities of the
  • Transmission Mapping and Integrity Support group.

Skills:  Good verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving, time management, and strong computer skills.

Abilities:  Quickly learn other business units’ processes and new technologies, address multiple tasks simultaneously, and work well with other business units.

  • Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:
  • Bachelor
  • Preferred Discipline(s): Geography, Information Technology
  • Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.
