Niyam is seeking a GIS Analyst to join our team in support of our work with FEMA.
This position is setup for remote work within the United States. We are looking for an GIS Analyst with 2-5 years of experience to support FEMA Risk MAP projects and other federal geospatial initiatives. This is a great opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic about using GIS to improve community resilience, floodplain mapping, and natural hazard risk assessment. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, proactive learner with a foundation in GIS and an interest in public service, flood risk, and emerging geospatial tools.
Role and Responsibilities
• FEMA Risk MAP Support: Contribute to the development of FEMA Risk MAP products, including regulatory floodplain mapping and non-regulatory risk assessments.
• Data Collection and Analysis: Collect, clean, and analyze geospatial and tabular data from diverse
sources, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
• Data Management: Maintain, organize, and optimize geospatial databases and datasets to ensure
data integrity and accessibility.
• Visualization and Reporting: Develop engaging visualizations and reports using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Online to effectively communicate findings to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
• Geospatial Expertise: Conduct advanced spatial analyses using GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online) and relational databases to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies.
• Project Coordination: Assist project teams with tracking tasks, organizing deliverables, and preparing documentation for FEMA submissions.
• Documentation & Writing: Contribute to technical reports, metadata, map notes, and documentation in line with FEMA standards.
• Stakeholder Support: Help prepare meeting materials, web maps, or figures for outreach to communities and stakeholders involved in Risk MAP.
• Workflow Automation: Leverage programming tools such as Python, R, model builder or SQL to automate data workflows and streamline processes.
• Collaboration: Work closely with team members and contribute to cross-functional projects.
• Quality Assurance: Perform quality control and assurance activities to maintain data accuracy and reliability that adhere to project requirements.
• Time Management: Manage multiple projects effectively, meeting deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
• Strategic Thinking: Apply strategic and problem-solving skills to tackle complex challenges and deliver
innovative solutions.
• Adaptability and Learning: Stay up-to-date with best practices and emerging technologies in GIS and data analysis.
• Business Development: Participate in NiyamIT business development activities.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- US Citizenship
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Data Science or related field
- Foundational understanding and experience of 2-5 years with GIS and related applications
- Proficient in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online) and geospatial data management.
- Strong understanding of geospatial data formats, coordinate systems, and common analysis techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct spatial analyses and create professional maps and visualizations.
- Experience with programming tools (e.g., Python, SQL) and workflow automation.
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills and the ability to contribute effectively under supervisor guidance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with Ability to work independently on tasks and contribute to team-based projects.
- FEMA’s Risk MAP and floodplain mapping.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with hydraulic and hydrologic data.
- Familiarity with natural hazard geospatial work.
- Python scripting skills or an interest in automation and workflow improvement.
- Experience with cloud GIS, ArcGIS Online, or web-based mapping applications.
- Awareness of tools or concepts from data science, machine learning, or remote sensing.
- Interest in community resilience, hazard mitigation planning, or emergency management.
- Masters, GIS certification (e.g., GISP) or additional coursework in GIS tools and methodologies is preferred.
