The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation (DOR) is seeking a talented, detail-oriented individual to serve as an Outdoor Recreation GIS Analyst. In this role, you will support the Division by delivering high-quality GIS services that increase efficiency and capacity across multiple grant and recreation programs.

Responsibilities

As the Outdoor Recreation GIS Analyst, you will:

  • Coordinate with DOR’s GIS Manager to execute projects that enhance the Division’s mapping and analytical capabilities. 
  • Identify and assess GIS needs to improve efficiency in operations, planning, and community outreach.
  • Work with the Grants team to inventory projects and track state investment in outdoor recreation infrastructure.
  • Publish GIS services and map products to support the Division’s mission and objectives.
  • Visualize spatial data to create maps and products that inform decision-making and communicate key insights.
  • Assist with development and quality control of Utah’s first statewide recreation asset database.
  • Provide GIS support to multiple DOR programs (Law Enforcement, Boating, OHV, Trail Crew) to maximize effectiveness.
  • Utilize and maintain the Esri suite of software, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Server/Portal.
  • Support regional trail and recreation planning efforts through data collection, aggregation, and spatial analysis.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 1–3 years of demonstrated successful GIS work experience in planning, recreation, or natural resources-related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and work with diverse people and agencies.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to speak effectively in public.
  • Experience and familiarity with Utah’s outdoor recreation opportunities.

 

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • GIS certification from an accredited college or university.
  • A bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, recreation & tourism, environmental science, or a related field OR at least four years of professional GIS experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with ESRI and other GIS tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Project management experience.
  • Ability to build collaborative, solution-focused partnerships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving skills with a pragmatic approach to process improvement.
  • Specialized GIS skills (scripting, advanced cartography, spatial modeling, programming, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Utah’s unique land management, Right of Way, and RS 2477 issues.
  • Familiarity with Utah’s outdoor recreation opportunities.

  • This position may occasionally require irregular hours, including evenings and some field work.
  • Overnight travel may be required for meetings, conferences, and project support.
  • A valid driver’s license is required and employees must meet the State of Utah’s Driver Eligibility standards.
