The Role

The GIS/Geospatial Team at InterDev is now offering an opportunity for a Geospatial Solutions Internship to the right candidate. Using the public-private partnership model, our team of GIS professionals provides high-quality products and services to our municipal government clients. As an intern, you will work with the GIS group on a wide variety of projects, which will prepare you for a career in the exciting world of GIS! As part of this role, you will gain hands-on experience utilizing desktop GIS software (primarily ArcGIS Pro), ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Online for data entry, spatial analysis, web mapping, and cartography.

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for Geospatial technology and its application toward developing solutions, providing informed and accurate answers to stakeholders, and sharing GIS data with the public at large.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development of GIS data to be utilized for public and internal access.
  • Maintain key datasets, including addresses, parcels, roads, and city assets, as well as all other existing and future datasets.
  • Perform spatial analysis and create information products utilizing GIS geoprocessing and other tools.
  • Assist in user experience testing of web maps and applications.
  • Capture GIS data in different formats using GPS, electronic data recorders, digitizers, and other means.
  • Perform GIS data quality control, including reviewing data for completeness and accuracy and identifying/correcting errors or omissions in the data.
  • Interpret detailed plans, photographs, maps, and legal descriptions, which include addresses, roads, stormwater systems, and city assets.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Regular attendance at meetup groups, conferences, or other industry events.
  • Perform other duties and tasks which may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Geospatial Solutions.

 

Competencies

  • General knowledge of geography, scientific methods, cartography, and relevant principles.
  • General understanding of Esri's suite of projects, including ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro.
  • Familiarity with programming and automation.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions, prioritize a list of tasks, and communicate progress and results.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work indiscriminately with various individuals regardless of their race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by state, federal, or local law.

 

Educational and Professional Qualifications

  • Working towards a bachelor's degree, GIS Certificate, or post-secondary degree with relatable experience or coursework.
  • Volunteer experience a plus.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

 

Physical Demands

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing may be required. There will be prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time non-exempt position, expected to last 3-4 months, 20 hours per week Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Candidate must successfully complete background screening and drug screening upon acceptance of position.
