Geospatial Data Analyst

ASU Library seeks a talented, dynamic, resourceful Geospatial Data Analyst to join its unit for maps, imagery, and geospatial services, the Map and Geospatial Hub (https://geospatial.asu.edu). The Geospatial Data Analyst is a service-oriented and detail-focused professional responsible for implementing workflows associated with the maintenance and expansion of ASU Library’s geospatial and cartographic infrastructure. The Map and Geospatial Hub manages two dedicated software platforms for distributing and curating geospatial and cartographic data assets: ASU GeoData (https://geodata-asu.hub.arcgis.com/) and the award-winning Map and Geospatial Hub 3D Explorer  (https://mapgeoasu.github.io/3dexplorer/). The person in this position is responsible for maintaining, enhancing, and populating those platforms with geospatial data, digital images, and associated web mapping applications. This involves the entire data acquisition and dissemination pipeline: identifying valuable new sources of public and proprietary geospatial data; facilitating data delivery/transmission processes from those sources; manipulating and managing large quantities of datasets in a diverse range of file formats; creating corresponding metadata records adhering to industry-compliant schema standards; loading data and metadata into tailored geospatial data distribution and curation platforms; producing derivative, value-added data products and their associated metadata; assisting with strategies for improving the efficiency and efficacy of geospatial data processing, documentation, and dissemination methods; and collaborating across the entirety of the organization and local community to best serve the University and global public. 

Essential Duties

  • Improve existing data management workflows by implementing automation methods, using relevant scripting languages and APIs
  • Optimize the discoverability of data assets by employing robust metadata records conforming to appropriate metadata schema standards
  • Actively search for, identify, and gather new geospatial datasets from public and private sources
  • Populate geospatial data discovery platforms with datasets described with easily searchable metadata records
  • Create intuitive, flexible, and long-lasting data and metadata file management structures
  • Develop ETL methods for batch harvesting metadata from existing repositories, including relevant crosswalks and other ingestion methods
  • Write technical documentation, such as SOPs and other internal manuals and guides, for metadata production workflows and data/metadata file management procedures
  • Develop customized web mapping applications curating geospatial data and cartographic resources
  • Respond to service requests pertaining to data and map assets
  • Train fellow staff and assistants on data and metadata management workflows
  • Teach instructional workshop sessions for non-specialists on data/metadata discovery and access tools
  • Add value to existing geospatial datasets and produce derivative data products and corresponding metadata records
  • Actively monitor and stay abreast of industry standards and best practices for geospatial and cartographic asset management

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Geography, GIScience, Computer Science, or Information Systems AND three (3) years of demonstrated competency as evidenced by professional work experience with geospatial software applications, data, and metadata and/or a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems; OR, Any combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Information Management, Computer Science, GIS, Geography, Web Development, Library Science, or a related field
  • Experience managing geospatial data and imagery resources (3 years)
  • Experience working with Esri desktop and web-based software products, such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Hub, etc. (3 years)
  • Experience developing, editing, and running scripts (using, e.g., Python, SQL, R) to automate geoprocessing and data/metadata management workflows (2 years)
  • Experience with basic web coding languages (html, css, js) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge with GitHub as a version control systems and code repository
  • Experience with both proprietary and open source GIS software applications
  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining spatial databases

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing.
  • Exposure to dust and other airborne materials.
  • Utilize computer, phone, and various technologies (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, Slack, Zoom, etc.), office equipment (copier, printer, scanner, etc.).
  • May oversee various projects within the library involving handling, sorting, shelving or relocation of physical materials.
  • Responsible for oversight of building security, maintenance issues, and compliance with university policy in absence of direct supervisor
  • May work alternate hours, including nights and/or weekends, as needed.
