City of Kenmore Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern

SUMMARY

The City of Kenmore is seeking a motivated GIS intern to participate in a variety of mapping, data, and web application projects. The successful candidate will contribute to the GIS solutions we deliver to our departmental clients and gain valuable real-world experience in geospatial work. A successful intern will develop skills in GIS fundamentals, GIS analysis, Enterprise GIS database design and GIS application development including Experience Build, Instant Apps, StoryMaps, and Dashboards.

The internship is limited to the 2026 calendar year and ends December 31, 2026. During active coursework, the intern may work a minimum of 16 hours a week. During summer, or when their coursework has finished, hours may increase to up to 32 hours per week depending on workload, preferably scheduled in full-day increments. Hours can be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Current student status is not required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete ad-hoc customer requests for GIS mapping, analysis, and data maintenance projects under the supervision of GIS Manager
  • Create and maintain technical and user documentation for service requests, projects, GIS processes and applications
  • Create and maintain GIS data sets
  • Develop GIS data processing scripts
  • Develop and configure GIS web maps and applications
  • Update existing GIS applications to WCAG standards
  • Attend appropriate team meetings and check-ins

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Windows, Teams, Word, Outlook, OneNote)
  • Hands-on experience with the Esri ArcGIS Suite of GIS software including at least one of the following: ArcGIS, Pro, ArcGIS online, ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Familiarity with GIS data types, formats, and spatial analysis fundamentals
  • Ability to support field data collection using mobile GIS/GPS equipment, walking long distances in varying terrain
  • Ability to self-train and troubleshoot using online resources and adapt to the latest geospatial technologies
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to convey technical information to non-technical users
  • Ability to build relationships with individuals from diverse communities, age groups, and abilities
  • Professional decorum consistent with a public-sector work environment

 

Physical Demands:

  • Sufficient hand-eye-arm coordination to use a keyboard plus arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment.
  • Visual acuity to read words and numbers.
  • Auditory ability to carry on conversations over the phone and in person.
  • The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Driving ability in order to transport oneself in and around Kenmore and King County.
  • Occasional outdoor work may be required which will require exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions.

Education and Experience:

Open to all 2- and 4-year graduate-level students preferably studying or who have recently graduated in: Geography, Computer Science, Information Sciences or a similar program of study. A GIS Certificate or a minor in GIS may substitute for a graduate program. Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.

Licenses and Certificates:

A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required to drive to various locations to perform work throughout the City of Kenmore or King County. If selected for this position, a good driving record with a three (3) year driving abstract would be required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Work environment – Duties are performed primarily indoors in an office environment located at 18120 68th Ave NE, Kenmore, WA 98028. Some work can be expected to be performed in the community indoors and outdoors.
  • Hours of Work – Typical hours may be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Intern will typically work 24 hours per week, but this may increase or decrease depending on school schedule.
  • Teleworking – The City of Kenmore expects that interns will be readily available to report to onsite work in Kenmore when operational needs require. Interns must have a Washington state address and live in Washington state at the time of hire and for the duration of employment. A hybrid teleworking agreement may be developed with the agreement and approval of the supervisor after successful completion of the first month of employment.
  • Washington Residency – Applicants must reside in Washington State at the time of employment to fulfill job requirements and comply with state employment regulations.

  • This position is eligible for the Washington State public employee retirement plan, and sick leave benefits consistent with Washington Paid Sick Leave (WPSL) laws.

  • Kenmore is located on the north shore of Lake Washington and has over seven miles of waterfront along the lake and the Sammamish River.
