Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern

This internship involves assisting the Planning Division of the Building and Planning Department with projects related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to update Township planning documents, datasets and maps for transportation, economic development, demographic and socio-economic analysis.
Works under the general supervision of the GIS Technician and the Assistant Director of Planning.
DutiesProcesses, analyzes, and manages spatial datasets using ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
Supports the creation, maintenance, and updates of GIS databases, shapefiles, and geospatial datasets.
Performs data analysis tasks, including qualitative and quantitative data gathering, tabulation, classification, analysis, and visual representation.
Creates, updates, and refines high-quality maps and spatial representations that support planning projects and municipal decision-making.
Works closely with planning staff on multidisciplinary projects.
Assists with research, field data collection, and integrating GIS into broader planning initiatives.
Contributes to compiling data-driven reports and crafting presentations that communicate complex spatial information in an accessible way.
Ensures the accuracy of spatial data and maintains high standards of quality in all mapping products and analyses.
Researches and implements best practices for GIS data management and efficient workflow.
Provides general GIS and mapping support as needed for various projects and Township initiatives.
Performs other related and assigned duties as required.
QualificationsHigh school graduate or equivalent and current undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Geography, Urban Planning or Studies, Community & Regional Planning, or a related field.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Experience with GIS, specifically with ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. Familiarity with creating interactive web maps using these tools is desired.
Strong attention to detail and standards.
Knowledge of coordinate systems, projections, and cartographic principles with ability to interpret spatial data to support planning decisions.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
Familiarity with database management and data visualization techniques.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the aptitude to explain technical information to diverse audiences.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented and dynamic environment.
Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
Physical RequirementsDepending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 30 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
Tasks are regularly performed inside and outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.
Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Most tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
